Snuggie lovin'
I am not allowed to watch infomercials. This is because I am so easily swayed by the ultra-convincing sales pitch and testimonials, I want to buy everything. I've bought Proactiv (even though I don't have acne), a food deyhdrator (which I never used; I donated it to Housing Works), and, most recently, the Ped Egg (which is now somewhere in the dark reaches of my linen closet). Back in December, my friend AH told me about the Snuggie--in an "Oh my god, can you believe they're selling a blanket with sleeves?" way--and as soon as I saw the ad (late-night cable! It was unavoidable!) I knew I had to have one. While I still haven't ordered one (there was a six-week delay, last I heard), I feel incredibly validated that the Snuggie has become a pop-cultural phenomenon. Case in point: Both the Washington Post and the U.S. News & World Report have written about it, and this morning, the entire staff of the Today show wore them. Even Refinery 29 has joined in the fun, with six stylish alternatives to the Snuggie (this being Refinery 29, we have entries from Oak and Pixie Market, and while stylish, none of them look remotely as comfortable as the Snuggie). My favorite post, however, is this one from Jezebel, in which Dodai shares a rather amusing IM conversation with her friend who wants to have a Snuggie party. Hilarious.
If you want to order a Snuggie (you get two for $19.95, plus a totally useless book light!), here's the official website. If you don't want to wait 6 weeks, I saw them at the Union Square Walgreen's for $14.99. And if you just want a laugh, I suggest watching this clip. Or, you know, you can keep an eye out for them at sporting events.

Fashion Week shakeup!
It's only Tuesday, and so far we've had two major bits of Fashion Week news. The first is that Marc Jacobs is slashing his guest list [subscription required] from 2,000 to 700; most of the standing attendees (roughly 200 people) will be employees. I think this is actually admirable--Jacobs and partner Robert Duffy are scaling down their show, as well as canceling their famed after-party, in order to avoid laying off employees. But as someone who's never been invited to a Marc Jacobs show, I find the whole thing quite amusing also. Will he invite any bloggers? What about lower-level fashion editors? Will VIPs be unable to bring their bodyguards/publicists/personal assistants? Will it still be the most glamorous show of the week? Marc Jacobs is the master of hype, and even by declaring that he's over the hype, he's created even more hype. Got that?
The other major Fashion Week news story came today: Starting in September 2010, Fashion Week is moving to Lincoln Center. I am a bit sad about this; with the exception of one ill-advised season at Chelsea Piers, Fashion Week has been at Bryant Park since 1993, and the two are synonymous in my mind. Also, I work a block away from the park, so getting to and from shows is quite convenient for me. Then again, as time goes on, I end up going to more and more off-site shows, so I suppose it won't make that much of a difference in the grand scheme of things. The new location--details of which aren't 100% clear in terms of layout--will be bigger and, hopefully, since it's not smack in the middle of Midtown, it will be slightly less chaotic. The funny thing, though, is that the Upper West Side has long had a reputation as being totally unstylish; hopefully this will help to change things.
Finally, I've decided to bite the bullet and Twitter during Fashion Week. This will allow me to share random tidbits that might not make it into my show reviews (celeb sightings, behind-the-scenes anecdotes, complaints about how much my feet hurt); if all goes well, I will continue to Twitter random shopping factoids throughout the year. As was leaked last month, Uniqlo has a very downtown coterie of designer collaborations lined up for spring [subscription required]: Steven Alan for women and Opening Ceremony for men hit stores in March; Shipley & Halmos for women and Gilded Age for men bow in May. Price ranges for all four lines will be a very wallet-friendly $19-$79. So while none of these lines are really anything to go crazy about, I'm sure they will be well made and quietly cool, as the previous Uniqlo designer collaborations have been.
If you're more excited about the McQ for Target collection, Target already has a microsite up and running; it helpfully counts down the days until the March 4th launch, and you can also preview a few looks and listen to a song by The Duke Spirit (singer Leila Moss was McQueen's inspiration for the line). But if you're like me and realized--oh, shit!--you're going to be on vacation when the collection hits stores, you're in luck: Racked reports that Target will open a pop-up shop, called the Target McQ Market, 2/14-15 from noon to 10 p.m., at 330 West Street, in the far West Village, a block north of Houston. Yep, it will be packed with all the fashionistas in town for Fashion Week (I'll have to strategically time my visit during one of the big shows that I'm not invited to), but, damnit, I must have that jumpsuit!

Buy it: 3.1 Phillip Lim tiered pencil skirt
A friend of mine recently referred to my fashion sense as "feminine," which totally threw me for a loop. I admit I wear skirts and dresses a lot, but I intentionally try not to dress so girly--no flowers, no ruffles, no embroidery, no flounces--because I do have a feminine personality (I mean, I write a shopping blog, for chrissakes). But since ruffles were all over the spring runways and, well, because I tend to succumb to peer pressure, I might have to make an exception, however, for this 3.1 Phillip Lim tiered pencil skirt. The ruffles are subtle, and the slim pencil shape is streamlined, so your figure won't be overwhelmed by volume and fluff. Plus, it's double-knit, so it will be flexible and comfortable. The only downside is the price--nearly $400--which is a bit on the high side, all things considered. But while I'm sure this skirt is going to get knocked off left and right, I don't think anyone will do it nearly as well as Phillip Lim. I will wear it with ankle boots and studded jewelry--just so no one gets the wrong idea.

People often ask me what designers I would wear if I had an unlimited budget, and, hands down, I always say Rick Owens. I don't own anything of his--his lower-priced line, Lilies, is still out of my budget even on clearance--but his gorgeously draped jersey pieces, soft washed leathers and weird, raw Goth aesthetic is the stuff my dreams are made of. Now, if I were to pick a mass-market collaborator for him, Eastpak would not have been my first choice (I, for one, haven't carried an Eastpak since high school). However, I'll take what I can get. Highsnobiety has pictures; I have my eye on the jacket. The collection will reportedly retail for $100-ish and hit stores sometime this fall. I, of course, will keep you updated.

I don't own anything of his--his lower-priced line, Lilies, is still out of my budget even on clearance--but his gorgeously draped jersey pieces, soft washed leathers and weird, raw Goth aesthetic is the stuff my dreams are made of. Now, if I were to pick a mass-market collaborator for him, Eastpak would not have been my first choice (I, for one, haven't carried an Eastpak since high school). However, I'll take what I can get. Highsnobiety has pictures; I have my eye on the jacket. The collection will reportedly retail for $100-ish and hit stores sometime this fall. I, of course, will keep you updated.

I'm going to cut right to the chase: Nylon has a preview of the McQ Alexander McQueen for Target collection (as I reported back in August and November), and it's very, very good. But if I could pick only one piece from the collection, it would be the jumpsuit, which is a very close approximation of this McQ tux jumpsuit, currently on sale for $614 at La Garçonne. It will be mine--oh, yes, it will be mine. The best part? The collection hits stores March 1, just in time for my birthday. If that's not serendipity, I don't know what is.

Silver linings in the recession cloud
The news has not been so great lately for the fashion industry, from layoffs (Saks cut 1,000 jobs today [subscription required]), to bankruptcies (Searle, among many other stores), to a thinner Fashion Week calendar (only 52 designers are confirmed for the tents in February, compared to more than 80 back in September). And then, of course, there was this article in today's Times Style section, about how the French are beside themselves with worry about the death of luxury. Never one to be at a loss for words, Karl Lagerfeld presents the following bon mots:
Of course, he's quick to point out that Chanel is doing just fine, thank you, in spite of the fact that they laid off 200 employees last month.
So, before I get too depressed, I will point out two relevant, well, points. The first is that these dire economic conditions are going to force retailers to lower their prices. This is not so good for the stores and designers, obviously, but the age of $2,000 handbags is coming to an end, and I don't know about you, but I'm pretty happy about that. The second is that while there will always be a "recession-proof" customer who can afford luxury prices, those of us who qualify as "aspirational" are also being taken care of. Case in point: Rock & Republic is launching a mini-line of "recession special" jeans (two styles for women, two for men), which will retail for $128-$138. True, those aren't Levi's prices, but considering that most R&R jeans retail between $200 and $350, that seems like a pretty good deal to me.
But what really makes me excited is that, as I reported back in August, current fashionista darling Alexander Wang is launching a lower-priced line of knit pieces, called T by Alexander Wang, and, according to The Cut, it hits stores in two weeks. Dresses are $85, tees and tanks are $74-$78, and you can find it at Barneys, Kirna Zabete, and Saks, where you can preorder it (which is what I'll be doing as soon as I finish writing this post, I kid you not). Preview the collection at Alexander Wang's website, where you can see the lovely Karlie Kloss modeling it (does she not make this look like the best gray T-shirt ever or what?). Yes, $74 for a tank top is not, at first glance, the best deal in the world. The news has not been so great lately for the fashion industry, from layoffs (Saks cut 1,000 jobs today [subscription required]), to bankruptcies (Searle, among many other stores), to a thinner Fashion Week calendar (only 52 designers are confirmed for the tents in February, compared to more than 80 back in September). And then, of course, there was this article in today's Times Style section, about how the French are beside themselves with worry about the death of luxury. Never one to be at a loss for words, Karl Lagerfeld presents the following bon mots:
“This whole crisis is like a big spring housecleaning — both moral and physical,” Karl Lagerfeld, the designer for Chanel, said in an interview. “There is no creative evolution if you don’t have dramatic moments like this. Bling is over. Red carpety covered with rhinestones is out. I call it ‘the new modesty.’ ”
Of course, he's quick to point out that Chanel is doing just fine, thank you, in spite of the fact that they laid off 200 employees last month.
So, before I get too depressed, I will point out two relevant, well, points. The first is that these dire economic conditions are going to force retailers to lower their prices. This is not so good for the stores and designers, obviously, but the age of $2,000 handbags is coming to an end, and I don't know about you, but I'm pretty happy about that. The second is that while there will always be a "recession-proof" customer who can afford luxury prices, those of us who qualify as "aspirational" are also being taken care of. Case in point: Rock & Republic is launching a mini-line of "recession special" jeans (two styles for women, two for men), which will retail for $128-$138. True, those aren't Levi's prices, but considering that most R&R jeans retail between $200 and $350, that seems like a pretty good deal to me. 
But what really makes me excited is that, as I reported back in August, current fashionista darling Alexander Wang is launching a lower-priced line of knit pieces, called T by Alexander Wang, and, according to The Cut, it hits stores in two weeks. Dresses are $85, tees and tanks are $74-$78, and you can find it at Barneys, Kirna Zabete, and Saks, where you can preorder it (which is what I'll be doing as soon as I finish writing this post, I kid you not). Preview the collection at Alexander Wang's website, where you can see the lovely Karlie Kloss modeling it (does she not make this look like the best gray T-shirt ever or what?). Yes, $74 for a tank top is not, at first glance, the best deal in the world. H&M might get the big names and Target is all about frequency, but when it comes to designer–mass market collaborations, Uniqlo gets the coolest designers. Case in point: The Fashion Informer, in this interview with Steven Alan himself, casually let drop that Alan is launching a collaboration with Uniqlo in spring 2009. (Note: This is not to be confused with Lark & Wolff, Alan's somewhat underwhelming line for Urban Outfitters.) Racked investigated, and according to the Uniqlo rep, who could neither confirm nor deny that Alan is on board, the designers will be announced at the end of January. In the meantime, Refinery 29 reports that Opening Ceremony will be another one of the designers. Now all we need is for Oak to get in on the action for a perfect uber-hip downtown boutique trifecta.

It seems Target has plugged up its leak, because without any previous rumors, they announced that Tracy Feith will be the next Go International designer [subscription required]! Feith's colorful printed dresses are popular among young Upper East Side socialites (he closed his Nolita store last year, but his Madison Avenue location remains open), and I am still kicking myself for passing up one of his dresses at an Intermix sample sale like 8 years ago. The 60-piece (!) collection will include summery, surf-inspired swimwear and clothing in original prints and Feith's signature super-bright colors, and prices range from $14.99 to $44.99, with a cropped leather jacket for $139.99. Just in time for warm weather, the collection hits Target stores May 17th.

Even more online sample sales!
Bricks-and-mortar stores are closing left and right, but online sample-sale sites are multiplying like, well, rabbits. Here are the latest sites to pop up since I last wrote about this phenomenon back in June.
Billion Dollar Babes, everyone's favorite sample sales for people who don't know how to shop sample sales, has recently entered the online game. So far, they've hosted AG Jeans, Taryn Rose shoes, Charriol jewelry, and, currently, Hayden-Harnett bags, which was the first sale I was able to view. So far, nothing is sold out, which is a nice change from the otherwise-excellent Rue La La and Gilt Groupe. However, prices are kind of all over the place--the Ibiza tote is a reasonable $75, but the Jinhee tote, which is $170 here, can be had for $142 on Hayden-Harnett's website. The good thing about BDB is that you don't need a referral to join the site; the flip-side is that you don't get referral credits when your friends join. Also, like Ideeli, you can pay $100 to be a platinum member, which gets you free shipping and two hours of early access to all sales. But you all know how I feel about paying for the privilege to shop.
Secret Style is based on the West Coast and thus fills the void left by the demise of Regent's Secret and also picks up some of Hautelook's slack. They don't have any sales live at the moment, but past sales have includes Reiss, People's Liberation, and Rock & Republic, and upcoming sales are William Rast, Raw7, and Gold Hawk. You don't need a referral to join, but if you do get a $10 credit if your friends join, so if you'd be so kind as to enter my address, cherylshopsblog [at] yahoo [dot] com, well, thanks.
The most exciting development, however, is the announcement of The OutNet, the outlet site from net-a-porter founder Natalie Massenet. Fashionistas are currently salivating over the possibilities, assuming the site will offer high-end designers at super-discounted prices, hopefully with a strong roster of British labels (granted, this is all just speculation). The OutNet isn't live yet--it's launching sometime in the spring--but you can sign up for membership (as of now, it's free--no referrals necessary) and presumably be notified when the site goes live. My credit cards are shivering with anticipation.

MasstigeWatch: Thakoon for Target
Yesterday I dragged MW to the Atlantic Center Target; it was the first day for the Go International collaboration with Thakoon, and I was so excited about it, I wanted to go to the store instead doing my usual online ordering. Since our neighborhood (and Manhattan, for that matter) had been dead since we got back to the city on Saturday, I was assuming Target would also be deserted; I was wrong. I was, however, glad I went to the store, because not only is this the best collection since Rogan, but the dress I had wanted is already sold out online, so I'm lucky to have grabbed it while in the store. The dress in question is the shibori shirtdress; I initially wanted the navy/white style featured in the ads, but I ended up with the black/white, whose pattern kind of resembles spiderwebs, giving it a kind of goth look. Also sold out online is the cyber floral dress; I think Target only had small and extra-small left by the time I was there, so I didn't bother trying it on. I didn't even see the chevron-stripe dress, but that's okay, because all of the other chiffon pieces in the collection are polyester and incredibly cheap looking (stick with the cottons). I also bought this zip-back floral top, which is nearly sold out online; the fit is kind of voluminous and makes me look pregnant from the side, but belting it or tucking it into a high-waisted skirt or pants seems to resolve the problem. The print is gorgeous, too, and I like the exposed back zipper. There are a lot of floral and striped tops; normally I am sucker for the latter, but the fit of what I tried on was on the boxy side (more on fit later), and since I already own so many stripes, I convinced myself to pass. I tried on the tunic, which was not bad, but the fabric felt kind of crappy to me (I thought it was polyester; I was shocked that it was cotton--it's kind of stiff and janky). The other piece I really liked was the shibori skirt; I thought it was incredibly flattering and well made, but since I was buying the dress in the same print, I figured one piece was enough. I recommend staying away from the tie-waist skirts, however, as they suffer from too-much-fabric syndrome and amplify whatever hippiness you may have tenfold.
So, like previous Go International collections, sizing is a bit wonky, but, if anything, it's on the side of being too large, rather than too small. In previous collections, a size 11 has often been too small on me (I wear a 6 or an 8 in real life), but when I tried on the shibori skirt above, even the size 9 was too big. I ended up with a large in the dress, but that was due more to inventory than anything else, and I think the slightly looser fit will allow me to wear a turtleneck underneath for the time being. I really, really love the dress, and at least for the cotton pieces, the quality and fit seems to be of much higher quality than recent collections (I'm looking at you, Jonathan Saunders). Since many of these pieces are selling out already, I highly suggest ordering now, or hitting your local Target ASAP.

Buy It: Ben Amun coin necklace
The Long Island-based website Singer22.com sends me daily emails, usually about items they carry that C-list Hollywood starlets and celebutantes have been spotted wearing. And usually I delete them. However, recently they sent one announcing the arrival of Ben Amun jewelry, as seen on Kate Moss, and, you know, anything that Kate Moss wears is good enough for me. Fashionologie had actually reported on Kate and her new necklaces back in August, and I'd been keeping an eye out for them ever since. Looking like something she would've picked up whilst on vacation in Morocco, the necklaces fit so easily into that Kate Moss bohemian-rock-chic look that I try to emulate with varying degrees of success. Luckily, since Singer 22 so conveniently uses paparazzi photography as their product shots, it's easy to steal any star's style. Which brings me to the Ben Amun necklaces (before anyone points it out, yes, I know I missed the Ben Amun sample sale this week). I like the 36" silver coin necklace the best; it's $198, and the site is currently running at 20% off promo sitewide with code HOLIDAY20 through 12/25, conveniently bringing the price down to a totally manageable $158. Hey, it's a lot more affordable than Kate's Balenciaga bag.

With all of the heavy "recessionista" reporting going on in the media lately, leave it to the New York Times to write a rather amusing article about the rich shopping on the down-low in today's Style section. Ridiculous premise aside, the takeaway is that there are still a lot of wealthy people in this city, and they've got money to spend. If I were one of them, I'd spend it on this limited-edition Goyard trunk, filled with 100 Assouline books. Revolve Clothing, a Cheryl Shops favorite normally on par with Shopbop and the like, is offering "The List" this holiday season, a series of one-of-a-kind supergifts, kind of like the random million-dollar gifts in the Neiman Marcus catalog. Their first offering is this pristine white trunk, a collaboration between Goyard, the famed French luggage maker, and Assouline, the French publisher of art books. I've sung the praises of Goyard before, and I love Assouline's little biographic fashion books--they're light on words and heavy on photographs, and you can usually find them in used-book stores, so I pick them up whenever I can, because they make wonderful references. So I don't know what's more appealing--the old-school Goyard trunk or the mini Assouline library. Of course, for $20,000, that money could probably be better spent making a donation to an actual library, but I doubt any library houses its books so stylishly.

Cheryl Shops...Mulberry and LaROK/Elizabeth & James
Encouraged by Racked's glowing report of the Mulberry sample sale, I headed over to the Metropolitan Pavilion after work. The good: The sale is not crowded, there's a ton of merchandise organized neatly on tables, and Mulberry bags are gorgeously made out of buttery leather. But while prices are really good considering what they usually retail for (ballpark: $1,200), they were still way out of my reach. The least expensive purse is $199; most were around $499; but my favorite, the Roxanne, was still a painful $799. But considering how much inventory was left at 7 p.m., I'm guessing prices will be marked way down tomorrow, which is the last day. Hours are 10-7, and it's at the Metropolitan Pavilion, 123 W. 18th St. (6th & 7th Aves.), 5th floor.
After Mulberry, I headed over to the LaROK/Elizabeth & James sale, which is a few doors down the street. The space is large and well organized and labeled by size; all of the E&J is wisely in the front, with the LaROK in the back--I think Elizabeth & James (the Olsen twins' contemporary line) is really great, whereas LaROK is a bit too...Los Angeles for my taste. Anyway, while there was a lot of merchandise, none of it totally rocked my boat, especially in light of the prices: For E&J, tees are $25, shirts are $99, dresses are $125, and jackets are $175. LaROK had already marked down their prices by the time I got there--tops were $49-$69, dresses were $79-$99, and prices topped out at $109 for outerwear. Cheryl Shops...Helmut Lang/Rag & Bone and Hanky Panky (sort of)
I love me some Rag & Bone, so I headed over to Clothingline during my lunch hour today for the first day of their sale, which also features Helmut Lang and Gryphon. I was really surprised that there was not a line to get in; thank god this sale wasn't advertised in Daily Candy. The good news is that there was a lot of merchandise, the sale wasn't crowded at all, and you can try on clothes to your heart's desire. The bad news is that while prices are reasonable, especially in light of what Rag & Bone retails for, they're not as cheap as I was expecting. Shirts and jeans are $79, sweaters and pants are $99, skirts are $109, dresses are $149, and blazers are $175. The Helmut Lang prices were a bit lower (there were two racks of even lower-priced samples too), but aside from some great-looking coats and jackets for $249, I wasn't too jazzed by the offerings. Gryphon coats were $179-$299. And, oh, for the men in your life, at least a third of the sale is men's Helmut Lang and Rag & Bone (be forewarned that most of the small sizes are already gone, however). While I contemplated buying a striped boyfriend shirt and some knit jodhpur-type pants, I ended up leaving empty-handed. But if prices get slashed, I will definitely go back.
After work, I headed over to the Hanky Panky sale, thinking that, at 6:30 p.m., I'd breeze right in, stock up on low-rider thongs, and be on my merry way. Wrong! This is what the line looked like when I got there--it wrapped around the corner of 28th Street. And as much as I love waiting outside in 40-degree weather, I decided to head home instead.
