Some people are denim people, some people are black pants people, and some people are dress people. I'm none of those—I'm a skirt person! I have long legs and a freakishly short torso, so skirts work well for me because I can adjust the proportions to work with my body. And while I love skirts of all lengths, minis are my favorite because they highlight my best asset, my legs. As Diahann Carroll famously said, the legs are the last to go, so I will continue wearing my skirts until, well, they go. Of course, there is an art to wearing a mini when you're a woman of a certain age.


I totally did not need this skirt—I have something very similar already, although it's printed and full, so, it's a little different—but I loved it, and I know I will wear it a lot. It's by BCBG, which I thought had gone out of business, but apparently they're alive and well (I used to buy a lot of BCBG years ago when I worked for Macy's and got a ridiculous discount). The tiered shape and color are very feminine, but the pleats are really interesting and almost futuristic. The length is also perfect—it's above the knee, but not too short—and the very slight A-line shape is very flattering. The skirt has an elastic waistband, which may or may not be a selling point for you, but I've covered it up with my trusty Gucci belt. I'm wearing a medium for reference.



I've tried to wear this blazer twice here and it's never quite gelled, so I'm happy it finally worked with this outfit. I feel like every woman should own a navy blazer, in addition to a black one—it's just a little lighter and better suited (pun intended) for the spring and summer. I've had this Theory blazer for ages; it's definitely worth the investment. I especially love navy with pale pink, as it's a little unexpected. And in writing this, I realize the blazer-and-pleated-skirt combo has kind of a prep school vibe to it, but I'm totally ok with that. It's all about fit and proportion; this one has more of a boyfriend fit that's just so timeless.




And while I started off talking about the skirt, I actually built this look around the shoes, which, if you follow me on Instagram, you know that I ordered one night after three glasses of wine. I love them—they are super comfy, the patent leather is surprisingly soft, and the heel is nice and sturdy. They were perhaps a bit more than I would have spent if I were sober, but I am really happy with them overall—they're a keeper. As is my birthday bag (last seen here)!




We shot these photos in Potrero Hill, which is a special neighborhood to me, because it's where my boyfriend lived when we first started dating. I had never spent much time there before—and haven't spent nearly enough since—but it's now one of my favorite neighborhoods in San Francisco (it has amazing views, for one), and it was good to be back!
