More posts coming next week
Sorry for the sparse posts; I have year-end-itis, so I think this will be my last post for this week (and for 2008!), but I will be back in full effect next week. Thanks for reading Cheryl Shops, and please check back soon!
MasstigeWatch: Thakoon for Target
Yesterday I dragged MW to the Atlantic Center Target; it was the first day for the Go International collaboration with Thakoon, and I was so excited about it, I wanted to go to the store instead doing my usual online ordering. Since our neighborhood (and Manhattan, for that matter) had been dead since we got back to the city on Saturday, I was assuming Target would also be deserted; I was wrong. I was, however, glad I went to the store, because not only is this the best collection since Rogan, but the dress I had wanted is already sold out online, so I'm lucky to have grabbed it while in the store. The dress in question is the shibori shirtdress; I initially wanted the navy/white style featured in the ads, but I ended up with the black/white, whose pattern kind of resembles spiderwebs, giving it a kind of goth look. Also sold out online is the cyber floral dress; I think Target only had small and extra-small left by the time I was there, so I didn't bother trying it on. I didn't even see the chevron-stripe dress, but that's okay, because all of the other chiffon pieces in the collection are polyester and incredibly cheap looking (stick with the cottons). I also bought this zip-back floral top, which is nearly sold out online; the fit is kind of voluminous and makes me look pregnant from the side, but belting it or tucking it into a high-waisted skirt or pants seems to resolve the problem. The print is gorgeous, too, and I like the exposed back zipper. There are a lot of floral and striped tops; normally I am sucker for the latter, but the fit of what I tried on was on the boxy side (more on fit later), and since I already own so many stripes, I convinced myself to pass. I tried on the tunic, which was not bad, but the fabric felt kind of crappy to me (I thought it was polyester; I was shocked that it was cotton--it's kind of stiff and janky). The other piece I really liked was the shibori skirt; I thought it was incredibly flattering and well made, but since I was buying the dress in the same print, I figured one piece was enough. I recommend staying away from the tie-waist skirts, however, as they suffer from too-much-fabric syndrome and amplify whatever hippiness you may have tenfold.

So, like previous Go International collections, sizing is a bit wonky, but, if anything, it's on the side of being too large, rather than too small. In previous collections, a size 11 has often been too small on me (I wear a 6 or an 8 in real life), but when I tried on the shibori skirt above, even the size 9 was too big. I ended up with a large in the dress, but that was due more to inventory than anything else, and I think the slightly looser fit will allow me to wear a turtleneck underneath for the time being. I really, really love the dress, and at least for the cotton pieces, the quality and fit seems to be of much higher quality than recent collections (I'm looking at you, Jonathan Saunders). Since many of these pieces are selling out already, I highly suggest ordering now, or hitting your local Target ASAP.

Sadly, the Atlantic Center store did not appear to have any Hayden-Harnett bags; they are available online for pre-order, but early word on the street is that, like previous handbag collections, they're kind of cheap-looking.

Buy It: Ben Amun coin necklace
The Long Island-based website Singer22.com sends me daily emails, usually about items they carry that C-list Hollywood starlets and celebutantes have been spotted wearing. And usually I delete them. However, recently they sent one announcing the arrival of Ben Amun jewelry, as seen on Kate Moss, and, you know, anything that Kate Moss wears is good enough for me. Fashionologie had actually reported on Kate and her new necklaces back in August, and I'd been keeping an eye out for them ever since. Looking like something she would've picked up whilst on vacation in Morocco, the necklaces fit so easily into that Kate Moss bohemian-rock-chic look that I try to emulate with varying degrees of success. Luckily, since Singer 22 so conveniently uses paparazzi photography as their product shots, it's easy to steal any star's style. Which brings me to the Ben Amun necklaces (before anyone points it out, yes, I know I missed the Ben Amun sample sale this week). I like the 36" silver coin necklace the best; it's $198, and the site is currently running at 20% off promo sitewide with code HOLIDAY20 through 12/25, conveniently bringing the price down to a totally manageable $158. Hey, it's a lot more affordable than Kate's Balenciaga bag.
Object of Desire: Goyard Trunk by Assouline
With all of the heavy "recessionista" reporting going on in the media lately, leave it to the New York Times to write a rather amusing article about the rich shopping on the down-low in today's Style section. Ridiculous premise aside, the takeaway is that there are still a lot of wealthy people in this city, and they've got money to spend. If I were one of them, I'd spend it on this limited-edition Goyard trunk, filled with 100 Assouline books. Revolve Clothing, a Cheryl Shops favorite normally on par with Shopbop and the like, is offering "The List" this holiday season, a series of one-of-a-kind supergifts, kind of like the random million-dollar gifts in the Neiman Marcus catalog. Their first offering is this pristine white trunk, a collaboration between Goyard, the famed French luggage maker, and Assouline, the French publisher of art books. I've sung the praises of Goyard before, and I love Assouline's little biographic fashion books--they're light on words and heavy on photographs, and you can usually find them in used-book stores, so I pick them up whenever I can, because they make wonderful references. So I don't know what's more appealing--the old-school Goyard trunk or the mini Assouline library. Of course, for $20,000, that money could probably be better spent making a donation to an actual library, but I doubt any library houses its books so stylishly.

Cheryl Shops...Mulberry and LaROK/Elizabeth & James
Encouraged by Racked's glowing report of the Mulberry sample sale, I headed over to the Metropolitan Pavilion after work. The good: The sale is not crowded, there's a ton of merchandise organized neatly on tables, and Mulberry bags are gorgeously made out of buttery leather. But while prices are really good considering what they usually retail for (ballpark: $1,200), they were still way out of my reach. The least expensive purse is $199; most were around $499; but my favorite, the Roxanne, was still a painful $799. But considering how much inventory was left at 7 p.m., I'm guessing prices will be marked way down tomorrow, which is the last day. Hours are 10-7, and it's at the Metropolitan Pavilion, 123 W. 18th St. (6th & 7th Aves.), 5th floor.

After Mulberry, I headed over to the LaROK/Elizabeth & James sale, which is a few doors down the street. The space is large and well organized and labeled by size; all of the E&J is wisely in the front, with the LaROK in the back--I think Elizabeth & James (the Olsen twins' contemporary line) is really great, whereas LaROK is a bit too...Los Angeles for my taste. Anyway, while there was a lot of merchandise, none of it totally rocked my boat, especially in light of the prices: For E&J, tees are $25, shirts are $99, dresses are $125, and jackets are $175. LaROK had already marked down their prices by the time I got there--tops were $49-$69, dresses were $79-$99, and prices topped out at $109 for outerwear. Since the sale has two days left, hopefully more reductions are on the way. Through 12/6; 10-8; 145 W. 18th St. (6th & 7th Aves.).
Cheryl Shops...Helmut Lang/Rag & Bone and Hanky Panky (sort of)
I love me some Rag & Bone, so I headed over to Clothingline during my lunch hour today for the first day of their sale, which also features Helmut Lang and Gryphon. I was really surprised that there was not a line to get in; thank god this sale wasn't advertised in Daily Candy. The good news is that there was a lot of merchandise, the sale wasn't crowded at all, and you can try on clothes to your heart's desire. The bad news is that while prices are reasonable, especially in light of what Rag & Bone retails for, they're not as cheap as I was expecting. Shirts and jeans are $79, sweaters and pants are $99, skirts are $109, dresses are $149, and blazers are $175. The Helmut Lang prices were a bit lower (there were two racks of even lower-priced samples too), but aside from some great-looking coats and jackets for $249, I wasn't too jazzed by the offerings. Gryphon coats were $179-$299. And, oh, for the men in your life, at least a third of the sale is men's Helmut Lang and Rag & Bone (be forewarned that most of the small sizes are already gone, however). While I contemplated buying a striped boyfriend shirt and some knit jodhpur-type pants, I ended up leaving empty-handed. But if prices get slashed, I will definitely go back.

After work, I headed over to the Hanky Panky sale, thinking that, at 6:30 p.m., I'd breeze right in, stock up on low-rider thongs, and be on my merry way. Wrong! This is what the line looked like when I got there--it wrapped around the corner of 28th Street. And as much as I love waiting outside in 40-degree weather, I decided to head home instead. So...I will try again tomorrow on my lunch hour instead. Check back for an update tomorrow!

MasstigeWatch!
Last week, Target announced two tasty bits of information. First, since its Go International collection with Rogan Gregory was so successful, they're launching an eco-friendly Loomstate for Target collection [subscription required], featuring organic cotton, linen, and silk pieces. The line will hit stores on April 19th, just in time for Earth Day on April 22nd, and will be available until May 16th. And, buried in WWD's Fashion Scoops [subscription required] last week: a Felix Rey handbag collection, available March 29-June 14 and a shoe collection from Miss Trish of Capri, available April 5-June 14, are also coming soon to a Target near you (and, of course, Target.com).

Spurred on by the success of this month's Comme des Garcons collection--and perhaps realizing that by offering just one designer collection per year, they're probably missing out on a piece of the masstige pie--H&M will launch a collaboration with Matthew Williamson [subscription required], the Brit who until recently designed Pucci (his namesake collection, beloved by Brit It Girls, will open a Meatpacking District store next year). The bonus is that this collaboration comes in two parts: The first, a 20-piece capsule collection, will hit 200 H&M stores worldwide on April 23rd; the second, a 30- to 40-piece men's and women's collection, will drop in all 1,700 H&M stores in mid-May. That means that if you're a fan of Williamson's colorful designs, you might actually get your hands on some of them.

Buy It: Tom Ford Private Blend Rollerball Set
I love Christmas for myriad reasons, but I take particular joy in paging through all of the gift catalogs I receive. I especially like the department-store catalogs, which are of thick paper stock and filled with gorgeous photographs of totally useless, often rhinestone-encrusted or fur-trimmed gift items. I wonder about the people who actually give most of these items, as well as the poor people who receive them; do the gifts get returned to the store, then marked down in after-Christmas clearance sales, or do they sit unused and unloved in the recipient's closet? One gift I'm always happy to receive, however, is fragrance; in recent years, I've become quite a perfume junkie, and I am always happy to sample a random collection of scents, or to receive a lotion-and-shower-gel set of my one of my favorites, since those are things I tend not to buy for myself. And every once in awhile, a gift set comes along that totally knocks my socks off. This year, that set is the Tom Ford Private Blend Rollerball Set, a collection of all twelve of Ford's pricey, hard-to-find Private Collection scents. You'll find all of them here, from Oud Wood to Tobacco Vanille (which, it should be noted, retail for $180 for the 1.7 ounce size), and while the fragrances tend to be pretty potent, I think mixing them would create even more unique, luxurious scents. The set is $225, which is not entirely unreasonable, especially for a holiday gift. I'm hoping Santa brings one for me.

Just two weeks ago, Alexander McQueen's collection for Target was confirmed; now, today, we have an article in WWD [subscription required], complete with pictures and interviews! Since you likely can't read the article, here's the pertinent info: The McQ Alexander McQueen Designer Collaboration will hit only 250 select Target stores starting March 1st, as well as target.com, and nothing will cost more than $129.99. Here's muse Lelia Moss modeling one look from the collection. Get excited!

In the meantime, we have Michelle Obama fave Thakoon's Go International collection hitting Target in November; Nylon has a sneak preview. I love the batik prints, and it looks like many of the pieces are cotton, which is a plus, since so many of the previous Go Internationals have suffered from Cheap Fabric Syndrome. More details as soon as they're available...

Cheryl Shops...Araks & The News
After yesterday's Comme des Garcons debacle (and the fact that my boss called in sick today), I figured I deserved a lunchtime shopping trip, so I headed down to Soho. My first stop was the Araks sample sale, which is very well organized and populated with friendly, helpful workers. There are big bins of cotton undies and bras, all of which were $15; it's somewhat slim pickings in the Medium bin, but Small and Large particularly seemed to have more of a selection (the grass is always greener...). There are also matching bras, but only for sizes 36C and under. Fancier samples of silk and mesh undies, bras, camisoles, and slips are hanging on racks and were marked roughly $30 and up. There is also a small rack of clothing; I recognized a some of the looks from last spring's Araks runway show. There is a separate, private room off to the side if you want to try anything on; I ended up with two pairs of printed boy shorts ($15 each), which are cut generously and made of supersoft cotton that only gets better with age. The sale runs through 6:30 p.m. today, at 137 Grand St. (Lafayette & Crosby Sts.).

I then headed over to The News, a showroom which has on its roster a smattering of cool downtown labels. I was really excited about Boy by Band of Outsiders (or, as I like to call it, Boy Band of Outsiders), which makes my favorite button-down shirts, but the selection was a bit slim and the prices were not so great ($100 and up). However, everything else in the sale is cheapity-cheap, the location is huge, and the selection is vast--for women, at least (guys, unfortunately there are a scant two racks of clothes for you). Cheap Monday jeans are $10-$40, and most styles looked to be about $20. Clu tops and skirts are $30; dresses are $60 (I got a sweatshirt-type top and a super-awesome tulip skirt). There's quite a bit of Shipley & Halmos, but I didn't check prices (sorry); Walter dresses appeared to be mostly under $100. The best deals, however, are on Vena Cava: I could not find anything over $100, and we're talking $700 silk dresses here, some of which I swear I've seen on Blake Lively (or her alter ego, Serena van der Woodsen). There are several tables of accessories and jewelry that I didn't have time to peruse, as I was starting to feel guilty about taking a two-hour lunch, but I'm sure prices are reasonable. Another plus is that I saw a range of sizes in everything--this is clearly a sample and stock sale, which is nice for those of us who aren't exactly size 0 (but, hey, size 0s, there's plenty for you too!). Also, be warned: There is a fitting room that has a skinny mirror that makes you look absolutely fantastic in everything you put on; I had to talk myself out of several dresses that I didn't really need. The sale runs through tomorrow; hours are 10-6 today, 10-5 tomorrow; 495 Broadway (at Broome St.), 5th floor.
I went to H&M and all I got was this lousy Comme des Garcons T-shirt
Okay, first of all, let me apologize for saying the stores were opening today at 10 a.m.--that is what the press release I received from H&M said. But, lo and behold, as I rolled up to the Penn Station store at 9:30 this morning and discovered there was no line, I realized the stores had actually opened at 9 a.m., and all that was left at that store was a rack of solid-colored button-down shirts. Bo-ring. So I hightailed it over to the 34th Street store, which still had a rack of the corset dresses, a rack of trench coats, more solid button-downs, solid T-shirts, and, thankfully, the deconstructed colorblocked tee, which was one of the things I had wanted. I snapped up the last medium, then I joined the crowd of 15 or so people hovering around, waiting for sales associates to bring back unwanted items from the fitting rooms. (I also spent this time glaring at the people who were hoarding about 16 or so items that they clearly could not buy all of, since there was a two-item limit.) No such luck. But, I did see a tiny Asian woman (seriously, she must've weighed 85 pounds soaking wet) try on my coveted inside-out jacket, and it was snug on her, so that made me feel better. I also saw another woman buying the drop-crotch pants, and they looked comically huge, so that made me feel better too. I didn't even see the deconstructed pencil skirt or the jodhpurs, but, you know, I have enough black skirts and pants, so I can live without them. That said, I am quite happy with my T-shirt--it's a nice wool, and it doesn't look as crazy as it does in the photos.

So, if you're interested in the dress, the trench, the shirts, or the tees, head over to Herald Square. If not, I'm sure stuff will start popping up on eBay later today...
MasstigeWatch: All you need to know about Comme des Garcons at H&M
So. Thursday, November 13th is the big day: The launch of Comme des Garcons at H&M. You can preview the entire line (plus prices) on the H&M website; I suggest using it to create a plan of action (I, for one, want the inside-out jacket, the asymmetrical T-shirt, the asymmetrical pencil skirt, and maybe the jodhpurs). Racked has photos from the store's Japan debut on Saturday, for another perspective. Now, stores open at 10 a.m. on Thursday; depending on how big a fan you are, plan on getting there early and waiting in line. The rumor, as reported by Fashionista, is that H&M is imposing a two-item per garment limit--if true, this will hopefully foil those who plan on buying in bulk and reselling on eBay (then again, it's bad news if you were one of those people hoping to buy on eBay). The collection is available only in eight stores in the U.S. (four in NYC); here's the list:

New York:
H&M Fifth Avenue at 51st Street
H&M Penn Station
H&M 34th Street at 6th Avenue
H&M Lexington at 59th Street

Chicago:
H&M North Michigan Avenue

Los Angeles:
H&M Sunset Boulevard
H&M Beverly Center

San Francisco:
H&M Powell Street

I'll post an update as soon as I get to work on Thursday (I'll be at one of the 34th Street locations, but I haven't decided which one yet). Good luck and godspeed.
Not so much: model sponsorship
I subscribe to Urban Daddy, even though I suspect it's geared more toward men (the name is a dead giveaway, for one). They usually write about the new hot restaurants and bars, and sometimes they even have sample sale listings, but every once in awhile, they have me scratching my head. Case in point, yesterday's email, about Beauty Holding, a website where you can "invest in" models. What? Yes. Basically, you can invest as much money as you want; once a model reaches $10,000, Beauty Holding promises to send her off to Paris and London for photo shoots and to introduce her to European agencies. The model then splits her earnings 50-50 with the site; for every $100 you invest, you get 1% of her earnings. Of course, this is a bum deal for both models and investors. For the latter, I know the economy is bad, but even an interest checking account has a better rate of return. For the former, 50% is a ridiculous commission for a model; agencies normally take 20% max. Yes, we're in the Web 2.0 age of social networking and MySpace and all that, but is this really the future of the modeling industry? The agencies are exploitative enough as it is; this is taking it a bit too far, if you ask me. But still, I don't know what's more sad--the women who are posting their photos (chiefly of the swimsuit-model type) here, or the skeevy men who are investing in them.

Object of Desire: Boucheron Delilah necklace
A few weeks ago, I dragged TiltzyBeauty with me to see the Desir show at Spiegelworld down at Pier 17. The show just closed on Sunday, but, in case you were wondering, it was a Cirque du Soleil-esque cabaret show featuring nearly every socially acceptable sexual fetish (whipped cream, cross-dressing, bi-curiosity, etc.), presented in an artsy, Moulin Rougey, 1890s Paris kind of way. The more important part is that Boucheron was one of the sponsors of the show, and in fact they had a tiny pop-up store set up within the Spiegelworld sprawl. (Boucheron, in case you haven't heard of them, is a 150-year-old French jeweler known for outfitting Maharajahs and movie stars, and is now owned by PPR, making it a cousin of Gucci, Balenciaga, YSL, et al.) Whether anyone actually purchased anything there, I am not so sure, but Tiltzy and I definitely ogled all of the goods--jeweled animals, geometric pieces, and even bejeweled sunglasses. But the piece that I couldn't take my eyes off was the deceptively simple Delilah necklace. Designed to look like a scarf, it's a long woven gold necklace with gold chain fringe at the ends, designed to be wrapped or tied around the neck. It's absolutely stunning. It's also $17,000, but a nice little feature of Boucheron's new e-commerce site is that you can hide the prices--and, hey, what you don't know won't hurt you.
MasstigeWatch!
There are not many sure things in the fashion industry, but a pretty safe bet is when any rumor about Target's designer collaborations is leaked to Women's Wear Daily, it's likely to be true. They reported back in August that Alexander McQueen was in talks to design a Go International collection for the retailer; that rumor has now been confirmed, somewhat. The line, McQ Alexander McQueen for Target, will be based on McQueen's lower-priced McQ contemporary line, and it won't be part of Go International, which has traditionally showcased up-and-coming designers. Instead, the line will be the first installment of Designer Collaborations, an ongoing initiative to bring established high-end designers to Target shoppers (and, presumably, to help fill the void left by the departure of the Isaac Mizrahi line). Inspired by Leila Moss, the smokin'-hot singer of The Duke Spirit (pictured above), McQueen's collection will have a rock-and-roll edge, with lots of skinny jeans, bubble dresses, studded trim, and graphic tees. It arrives in stores March 1st--just in time for my birthday--and stays for six weeks. Mark your calendars!

Fall Shopping Guide: Flat Black Patent Leather Boots
I have a major weakness for boots. I have a lot of them. I justify owning so many pairs, because in winter, they're pretty much all I wear. And while I probably don't need to buy another pair per se, there's always room for more. I don't own any patent leather boots, which is a shame, because if you think about it, they're perfect for inclement weather--patent leather is waterproof and much easier to care for than regular leather. So here are several great options for a flat black patent-leather boot. Think of it as the fashionista's snow boot.

My dream boots are these delicious Lanvin ones (they're sold out on the Barneys website, but still available at Kirna Zabete!). I like that the zip is in the back, and the detailing at the toe will prevent your feet from looking like weird, shiny flippers (it will also make your feet look smaller, counteracting the shiny, reflective nature of the leather).

These Burberry boots are a bit shorter in height, but if you ask me, 14 inches is the optimal length for tucking in pants, or for wearing with longer, knee-length skirts. Also, for $650, not too awful price-wise.

These Miu Miu boots are very similar to the Lanvin ones, in that they have detailing at the toe, but this pair has a more ornate wingtippy look to them. They also get bonus points for covering the knee--not a look that everyone can pull off, but easier than true thigh-high boots.

I like the petal-like detail at the top of Pelle Moda's Hansel boots. And for those of you who freak out about wearing totally flat boots, these have a tiny little wedge heel, for just a bit of a lift.

These Bless boots from BCBG are totally clean in their styling, and the shorter, half-length zipper gives them the look of a pull-on, but if you're wearing these over pants, allows you to adjust the hem without getting all bunchy.

Do you ever see a pair of shoes and think, "Where have you been all my life?" That's how I felt when I came across 8020's Jackie boots. The ingenious thing about them is that they look flat, but actually the three-inch wedge heel is concealed. So, yes, these are technically not flat boots, but when they look this hot, do you really care? Best of all, they're only $200, which I feel is an exceptionally good deal.

At a mere $110, the Chinese Laundry Tabb boots are the least-expensive boot featured here. They're simple, but they can hold their own against the above boots, and on a practical note, they have a rubber sole.

I guess these London Fog Wales boots are technically rain boots, but as far as rain boots go, they're quite chic. They're also totally waterproof, which is reassuring.

Another one of my favorite styles is Steve Madden's Swoop boots. I have somewhat of an aversion to zippers on boots, so I like that these are a pull-on style. True, the leather does not look like the highest quality, but for $150, I think they're a good deal.
