What to wear on New Year's Eve

I love New Year’s Eve in theory—dressing up, drinking champagne, celebrating the start of a new year—but don’t like it in practice—overpriced dinners, amateur drinkers, Uber surge pricing. So for as long as I can remember, I’ve taken matters into my own hands and hosted my own New Year’s Eve party. That way, I can celebrate with people I love in the comfort of my own home, and not have to worry about beating the traffic home. And while I get a little dressed up, I don’t get too dressed up. It’s the best of both worlds, and I highly recommend it. Here’s what I plan on wearing for this year’s festivities.

Full disclosure, I won’t really be wearing a coat, since I’ll be in the comfort of my own home, but if I were, it would be this one. (And yes, I realize it looks like I’m wearing a vest, but I'm actually wearing a coat—more on this in a minute.) I saw this on another blogger and thought it would be a good Northern California coat. It’s a somewhat lightweight wool blend in the body with ribbed knit sleeves—it’s kind of half sweater coat, half real coat, and over the ribbed turtleneck I’m wearing, it almost looks like a vest, an effect that I actually kind of like. I love that it can dress up on more formal occasions, but also works with jeans or leggings too. This coat runs a bit big; I’m in a small, which is still pretty generous on me.

While I’m not one to say “every woman should own an XYZ,” a black cashmere turtleneck sweater is quite possibly one of those things. This one is by Inhabit, and I bought it probably close to 15 years ago at their sample sale in NYC, proving that some things are truly worth the investment. I love that this one is a little longer—it covers my bum, so I can wear it with leggings or skinny jeans too. I’ve linked a similar style below.

I had been looking for a black midi skirt for awhile, and I almost bought one before realizing I could achieve a similar effect with my IRO dress, which you’ve seen several times on this blog, most recently with a denim jacket. This is something I’m working on for 2019: not buying clothes that are very similar to things I already own. What better time to start than New Year’s Eve?

While the rest of my outfit is somewhat sedate and neutral (which is great for covering up your holiday food baby), I wanted to add a little festivity with my accessories. The sequined clutch is one of my go-tos (you last saw it in this post), and the Gucci Marmont shoes were a self-birthday present (last seen here) and one of my favorite splurges of 2018. I love how both the shoes and the bag pop against my all-black outfit, and the silver sparkles feel very New Year’s Eve–friendly.

If this backdrop looks familiar, it’s because it’s where we photographed my blogiversary story, one of my favorite posts of the year. It looks slightly different in cold weather, but there’s nothing like shooting in front of multimillion-dollar houses to make your outfit look like, well, a million bucks!

And once more, I'm linking up with some of my favorite bloggers to show you what we're wearing on New Year's Eve. Stop by these fab ladies' blogs and say hi!

LINDA A Labour of Life "What I am not wearing this year for New Years Eve.
New Years is always glitz and glitter but also fur and warmth.  Adding my black fur helps make even the coldest of nights feel wonderful.  This year however I will be poolside in Orlando with my boys so I am sharing what I normally would be wearing not what I am actually wearing. (Only because it's hard to share a preview of what I will be wearing poolside, when there is so much snow around.) Happy New Year's Eve and wishing you all the best in 2019!"

MONICA Jersey Girl, Texan Heart "Ok, I'm going to be super blunt with y'all.  I will be staying in this year.  I posted a dress in yesterday's post, but let's be real, I will be relaxing and drinking my wine at home with my family and probably falling asleep before the ball drops, don't judge me haha!  I hope everyone has a happy new year!"

LAURA I Do deClaire "This fun top caught my eye on amazon a few weeks ago and I knew it would be perfect for NYE! My husband and I haven't gone out to celebrate NYE for years, but I still like to sparkle, even if it's at home! This top can be dressed up with a skirt or leather pants, but it's just as cute with black leggings or joggers if you are staying in. Hope you all have a safe and Happy New Year's!

ADA Elegance and Mommyhood " My plans for New Year's Eve this year are up in the air, but I might take my mom and my daughter out for dinner, to a nice restaurant. For sure I will be wearing some sparkle and some silver though. I love this ruffled-hem black+silver brocade dress I chose. With the right blush velvet shoes, a bow in my hair, a sequined clutch and crystal earrings, my dress is perfect for New Year's. Cheers to a Bright and Beautiful Two Thousand Nineteen!!"

ROXANNE Glass of Glam "I love any chance to wear sequins, so for this outfit I went all out with a long-sleeved sequin mini dress from Rent The Runway. I've had so many positive changes in my life this year that there is much cause to celebrate! To a successful 2018 and an even more successful 2019!"

BOJANA Bo's Bodacious Blog "It's Bojana from Bosbodaciousblog.  Even though we aren't going anywhere fancy for NYE, I am still planning on ringing in the New Year in style with this gorgeous, light pink, shimmery, pleated skirt and a crimson red velvet top.  Hop over to see the outfit details and read about our plans."

SHELBEE Shelbee on the Edge "I love the classic combination of black and white for special occasions and what is better than velvet, faux fur, and sequins for New Year’s Eve? I chose this black velvet burnout top from Foxcroft to pair with wide cuff cropped white denim for a comfortable but chic holiday outfit. My new black faux fur coat was a Christmas gift from my husband this year. I fell in love with this coat the moment it came into the consignment shop. And of course, sequined booties are perfect for ringing in the new year! Wishing you all a happy and blessed 2019!"

I found your New Year's Eve outfit very modern, chic, elegant, urban and unique, Cheryl. It is also very you and I think that is the hugest compliment. Those stunning Gucci loafers were the perfect fancy exclamation point! I also love that your sweater coat looks also like a vest since the ribbing is the same as the sweater you are wearing underneath. And I agree about a classic well-made black wool turtleneck. It is one of my 'style goals' n 2019 to style many versatile items and closet staples several times into many different outfits. I also do not need to add identical or similar pieces to my closet. As a matter of fact I plan to shop very little. I hope it works.

Oh and I am sorry I forgot to add your link and blurb to the collages but I did fix it and e-mailed everyone. =)

You can read my Holiday New Year's Eve post on the blog now with a brand-new Thursday Moda linkup and meanwhile I'd love for you to join the last "Skirting the Rules" linkup I have going (link below). Thank you for everything sweet and stylish friend. Happy New Year 2019 and many many blessings and good health into the new year!

Sorry, longest comment ever lol!

Cheryl, this outfit is gorgeous! It is so classic and very chic! And these amazing shoes reminded me of similar ones I have in gold. Maybe I will get them out today! Wishing you a very Happy New Year, my friend. May it be filled with peace, love, and joy!

This New Year's look is sleek, easy to attain and functional !
I wore black pants and a fuchsia top for NYE, went out for nachos and then back home. Keeping it simple.
Maybe too simple!!

I love how the beautiful silver shoes stand out against the black! Fabulous coat too - I thought it was a vest at first because the sleeves match your sweater perfectly! Thanks for linking up!
