Spring trends: gingham

As I'm writing this, I'm back home in Chicago visiting my parents, and it is hot and humid (and we don't have the air-conditioning on, but that's another story for another day). It's a stark contrast to the last time I was here, when it snowed (!), and everything is beautiful and blooming and oh my god, the pollen. Long story short, it's spring, and so onto our next trend, which is gingham. I feel like gingham had a brief moment in the early '90s when I was in high school; it's tricky to wear without feeling like you're in Green Acres, but the key is balancing the print with a more refined silhouette. Here are some of my favorite ways to wear it.

1. Wearing a red gingham print and not looking like a tablecloth in an Italian restaurant is a bit tricker than it seems, but with a high neckline, belted waist, and tiered skirt, this flirty, feminine dress looks totally sophisticated.
Aqua tiered gingham dress $54.60 (on sale!)

2. Banana Republic on trend? Who would have thought? Banana's bags are usually made from pretty high-quality Italian leather, and I love the half-moon shape of this one. And considering they're almost always running a 40% off sale, the price is right too.

3. Tops are one of the easier ways to update your look, and this one combines two trends in one: sleeve detail and a gingham print. Plus, it's just cute and looks easy to wear.

4. I used to have a red-and-white gingham bikini by OP (remember them?), and this maillot is a more streamlined take on the trend. I like that it comes in several different colors of gingham too.

5. If white-and-black gingham is a bit too much for you, this navy-and-black blazer is much more subtle, and will go with pretty much everything you'll wear this season.

6. Green and white gingham is not a combination you see very often, and that's primarily why these slides caught my eye, although the knot detail and chunky heel are pretty darn cute too.

7. I've been looking for a jumpsuit forever. Will this gingham number be the one? Probably not, but I appreciate that it's a cute alternative to the maxi-dress.

8. This skirt is so freaking cute, it give me hope that J.Crew is back. Plus, it's under $100, so how can you resist?

Here's how I wore the gingham trend in my post about what to wear in Bora Bora:
