Ford score
Tom Ford's last collection for Gucci scored him a standing ovation, teary fashionistas, and rave reviews from pretty much everyone (including Cathy Horyn, the Post, the Daily, and WWD). Basically, Ford said "to hell with daytime" and brought out a slew of evening looks, with nods to white jersey dresses, crystal-covered evening dresses, and shocking colors (chartruese, electric blue) from his previous collections. He also said "to hell with PETA" and, much like many of the collections shown so far, went crazy with the fur. More power to him. Anway, we still have the upcoming Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche show in March (in Paris), but until then, savor the Gucci show at Style.com.

Bonus: The Daily went a little crazy with the Tom Ford coverage, not that I'm complaining. They have a quote from Carine Roitfeld, coverage of Ford's going-away party, and reasons to miss him.

In this week's E! Yo, yo, yo, models, yo
Last night's America's Next Top Model was utterly ridiculous. First, the models had to dance and--this girl never ceases to amaze me--Shandi can actually groove something fierce! But bionic model April won the competition and picked Sara and Shandi to join her to go to dinner with...RZA, Ol' Dirty Bastard, and Kinetic from the Wu-Tang Clan. Seriously, how funny was it to see the anal-retentive April try to have a conversation with the slurring, nonsensical, missing-most-of-his-teeth ODB? Even funnier is that Shandi totally hit it off with Kinetic. I knew it from episode one--Shandi is the shit.

Still, the icing on the crazy cake was that the models had to dance in Tyra's new video, "Shake Ya Body," which sounds like a reject J.Lo song. Um, hello, blatant self-promotion. But, once again, Shandi kicked ass with the dancing.

Sadly, Sara--who is definitely the sexiest among the bunch--was asked to leave. But, never fear, I'm sure she'll turn up soon in the pages of Maxim. As for the rest of the bunch, my money's still on Shandi. I hope to god they get rid of Camille soon; and though I love Yohanna--she's definitely the most interested in fashion--I think her days might be numbered. There's been a lot of foreshadowing...

The best news I've heard all week
Sigerson Morrison, one of my favorite shoe brands, has created a second, lower-priced line called Belle. The good news? The shoes are about half the price of regular Sigerson Morrisons. The bad news? That's still in the $200 range (which is what Sigerson Morrisons used to cost). Still, every little bit helps, and I'm not complaining. (New York Magazine's Best Bets and Daily Candy also feature Belle today.)
The week in shopping
It's with great sadness that I announce Language is closing. (There's no word on whether the website will still be functioning.) Boo-hoo! There is a silver lining, however: Their entire stock, including new spring arrivals from Chloe, Stella McCartney, Marc Jacobs, and more, is 30%-90% off. Through 3/12; 238 Mulberry (Prince and Spring Sts.).

Like minimalism? Misorena is having a Calvin Klein sample sale, with the designer's signature line at 50%-75% off retail. Leather jackets are $395 (were $1,800), linen pants are $75-$95 (were $525), shoes are $95 (were $525), and men's suits are $395 (were $2,200). Through 2/29; 10-7, noon-7 Sun.; 260 5th Ave, (28th and 29th Sts.), ground fl.

Elizabeth Charles has fall/winter merchandise from Australian and New Zealand designers for 50% off. Through 2/29; 12:30-7:30, 12-6:30 Sun.; 639 1/2 Hudson St.
Weekend shopping
I'm off to lovely suburban Detroit for the weekend, but first I'll provide you with a list of sales to take advantage of. Also, last night I checked out the Intermix warehouse sale. They have a lot of stuff in a lot of sizes, especially miniskirts and cargo pants. I did not, however, see any Citizens of Humanity jeans or Chloe items as advertised. My advice is to wait a few days, when stuff will most likely be marked down quite a bit. I also stopped by the Barneys Warehouse sale on the way home (honestly, it was on the way home), and already it's kind of slim pickings. And they haven't really started marking things down, so that was disappointing. So I think I'm done with that sale for now. Anyway, onto the sales...

Conceptual design store Moss is having a warehouse sale with discountinued, slightly damaged, and tired home furnishings for up to 80% off. 2/21-2/22; 10-4; Brooklyn Navy Yard, 63 Flushing Ave., Building 3, Ste. 810, Dumbo, Brooklyn.

I love Tracy Feith’s colorful, crazy dresses, but seeing as how they're usually $500 and up, I don't own any. Luckily, everything in the store (dresses included) is now $150 and under. 2/20-2/22; 11-6:30; 209 Mulberry St.

La Perla's fancy, fancy lingerie (my personal favorite) is on sale for $29. This is one of those weird perma-sample sale venues, so no promises on the quality of the merchandise, but it's worth checking out. Through 2/29; 10-7, noon-7 Sun.; 260 Fifth Ave., (at 28th St.).

Jamin Puech's funky bags are 20%-50% off. Through 2/29; 11-7, noon-6 Sun.; 247 Elizabeth St.

Melanie Dizon’s hip bags are $110-$199. 2/20-2/21; 10-6; 396 Broadway (near Walker St.), ste. 702A.

Selima Optique and Lunettes et Chocolat have designer shades from Alain Mikli, Blinde, Gucci, and others for $50 and $100. 2/21-2/29; 11-7, noon-6 Sun.; Selima Optique, 59 Wooster St., 899 Madison Ave., (at 72nd St.), 84 E. 7th St.; and Lunettes et Chocolat, 25 Prince St.

Spring-a-ding-ding!
Gee, from all these e-mails I'm getting, you'd never know it's 40 degrees outside! Still, all these cute clothes make me want to move somewhere warm.

Arden B. has amazingly cute new arrivals. I like the drop-waist mini, which is a nice knockoff of the Ella Moss skirt, at half the price. They also have a lot of very feminine tiered tops like this one.

Neiman Marcus has new arrivals from Burberry and Prada. Check out these adorable D'orsay pumps.

Who knew? Kate Spade has designed a line of tableware. (I like the green ones.)

One of MW's faves Ben Sherman has new arrivals for fellas and ladies. Since I made MW throw out half of his shirts last weekend, perhaps I'll buy him this one.

Really, what girl does not love Anthropologie? They have new arrivals, including this Caribe necklace, which is gorgeous but $238. Yikes, when did their jewelry get so expensive?

For my fellow Apple-lovers out there, the iPod Mini will be in Apple stores tomorrow at 6 p.m. 103 Prince St. (at Greene St.).

I luv Girlshop, and they have some supercute new arrivals, like these Free People cropped pants. When did Free People start making such cute clothes? Not that I'm complaining!

Everyone knows how much I love Old Navy. Their latest knockoff coup? These Kitten-heel sandals are a dead ringer for the $85 Sigerson Morrison thongs and, at $12.50, nearly a seventh of the price. Now do you see why I love this store?

While we're on the topic of Gap-owned companies, Banana Republic also has new arrivals. Strangely enough, even the yellow stuff is appealing to me.

Of course, we can't forget the Gap itself. I am in love with this line of '70s-era Pucci-inspired lingerie. Much more affordable than Pucci, too.

Scoop has new arrivals. Because a girl should be able to dream, I want the Marc Jacobs Stella bag. In pink. Did I mention my birthday is in less than two weeks? Sugar daddy? Anyone?

Fashion Police
In this week's installment of E! Fashion Police, Cate Blanchett looks better pregnant than I do normally; Kirsten Dunst is a little droopy; Nicky Hilton makes up for Paris' overexposure; and Daryl Hannah has a big hair day.
For the home
Get 15% off any purchase of $75 or more through 2/25 at Art.com when you enter code BESTPIC at checkout.

The Company Store, purveyor of linens and such (and excellent down comforters), is having a Clearance Sale. I like these butterfly jersey sheets.

Select items at West Elm are up to 40% off, such as this sequin quilt.

Design Within Reach, featured last night on Queer Eye for the Straight guy, is having a sale, with items up to 50% off. I might order this little shelf for my storage-deprived bathroom.
Buh-bye, Catie!
Finally, crybaby Catie got das boot last night on America's Next Top Model. Now they just have to get rid of Camille, and things will really get interesting. A side note: Does anyone else feel like this season has been kind of gimmicky? Granted, there are more episodes this time, which means they need more stuff for the models to do, but I felt like the whole acting class thing was very "reality TV" and not so much high-fashion model. But maybe that was just me.

New York fashion week reviews: the remainders
Sorry for the sporadic postings, kids. I've been working my booty off. But, onto the shows...

WWD: Heavy hitters Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren, and (future heavy-hitter) Zac Posen; smaller designers Richard Tyler, Daryl K (yay, she's back!), Cynthia Rowley, and more.

NYT: Young designers; Calvin Klein vs. Zac Posen; and Cathy Horyn pans Donna Karan. Plus: Sex isn't selling anymore; designers who don't have shows; and Cathy Horyn muses on the disposability of fashion.

NYP: A trend summary.

Lookonline: Praise for Ralph Lauren, not so much for Donna Karan.

The Daily: London Fashion Week, et cetera.
Today's reviews
NYT: Hits from Ralph Rucci, Anna Sui, Peter Som, and others.

WWD: Raves for Calvin Klein, Anna Sui, and Ralph Rucci; a roundup of Carmen Marc Valvo, Baby Phat, Yeohlee, and Benjamin Cho; and my neighbor Behnaz Sarafpour and others. Plus, the changing mood of fashion: Now, less sexy is more sexy.

America's next top...felon?
I forgot to comment on Tuesday's America's Next Top Model. Too bad Xiomara got kicked off. She has such a cool model name. Anyway, as the models had "interviews" with "the world's first supermodel" Janice Dickinson, my dear Shandi alluded to past troubles with the law. A reader sent in this link: The Smoking Gun has Shandi's mug shot and arrest report. Poor Shandi. She may be a felon, but she's still my favorite.
Tidbits
Bluefly is having a designer clearance sale; items are up to 75% off.

Get $15 off a $75 purchase at The Gap when you enter code FEB15GAP at checkout.

Today through Monday, Bloomingdale's is having a Presidents' Day sale. The sale is in stores as well as on the website.

Anthropologie is also having a sale.

Style.com's Item of the Week is this amazingly cool Helmut Lang bracelet that looks like a handcuff. At $185, it's probably the most affordable item in his store.

Did you know Crate & Barrel has an online outlet? Me neither. But items are up to 70% off.
Grammy whammy
With all the Fashion Week excitement (well, and closing an issue at work), I completely forgot about critiquing the Grammy fashions! Luckily, the folks at E! Fashion Police have taken care of business for me. Still, I think I'll throw in my few cents.
Christina Aguilera: Again, the dress is a marked improvement, but the hair and accessories are a bit much.
JC Chasez: Channeling Crockett and Tubbs, but somehow it works.
Alicia Keys: Now, clearly this girl likes to wear jeans. Which is fine. But she needs to commit to either a dress or jeans--none of this capri-jeans-under-3/4-of-a-dress business.
Gwen Stefani: Everything she wears is a total risk, and she always pulls it off like a star. I admire this woman.
Justin Timberlake, a.k.a. bodice ripper: Brown suit and pink shirt. Hmm, poop and Pepto?
Ashanti: If I had abs like this, I'd be showing them off, too.
Lil' Kim: Wow, I think that's the most fabric she's ever been wearing!
Carson Kressley: You know, for someone who's supposed to be a style guru, he looks an awful lot like Liberace.
Sarah Jessica Parker: This wouldv'e been cuter if the skirt were about three or four inches longer. Still, very Carrie Bradshaw.
Sting, Trudie Styler, and daughter Koko: While none of them are wearing footwear that actually matches the rest of their outfits (navy socks, Sting? Navy?), I really can't say anything bad here.
Mary J. Blige: Big Bird goes to the disco.
Jennifer Love Hewitt: If you must wear an ill-fitting dress, please don't pair it with lucite stripper shoes.
Billy Bob Thornton: Um, isn't that a girl's shirt? 'Cause I have one exactly like it in pink.
Queen Latifah: Love the color, don't love the outfit. It's a little too Alicia Keys for my taste. Pants or dress: Make a decision.
Guy Ritchie & Madonna: They both look amazing. I have nothing snarky to say. Really.
Paula Abdul: The dress and the jewelry are great (it takes a capable woman to pull off Herve Leger, especially in orange). The hair and the fake tan, not so much.
Beyonce: She had definitely overcome her style rut (a.k.a. jumpsuits). This dress is amazing, and it almost makes her look like a fertility goddess (I mean that in a good way).
Today's reviews
NYT: Cathy Horyn fawns over Michael Kors, Narciso Rodriguez, Vera Wang.

WWD: They concur on Kors, Rodriguez, and Wang, plus Proenza Schouler; Menichetti, J. Mendel, John Varvatos, and Chaiken; and Generra (remember them?), Nanette Lepore, and more.

NYP: Everybody in fur! (Ooh, I'm going to get some snarky e-mails about that comment!)

Lookonline: Off-the-runway trends: leopard coats and winter white.

The Daily: More reviews!
The report on Barneys
I have a two-track mind this week: Fashion Week and Barneys. So this morning I hit the Barneys Warehouse Sale. I got there at about 7:50 (it opened at 8), and the line was on the long side but moved quickly. As usual, it was pretty crowded, but not unbearable. Now, I have a very stragetic way of shopping this sale. First I check out the super-designer stuff (the special section used to be in the back, over by the knits, but this time it's closer to the shoes). They have a lot of Dolce & Gabbana and Narcisco Rodriguez, and some of last year's Balenciaga, but unfortunately no Marni or Prada. Then I hit "ready-to-wear" (mostly stuff from Co-op and private label). They have a ton of Marc by Marc Jacobs--clearly the mod look didn't sell too well. There was also a lot of Diane von Furstenberg, Joie, Seven (no jeans, though--but they did have some cute velvet cropped pants, which I almost bought then decided I didn't really need), Habitual, Ya-Ya, Rogan, Vince, Vanessa Bruno, etc. Then I hit the knits--again, a lot of Marc by Marc Jacobs. They also had quite a few really thick cashmere sweaters (at least four-ply, probably closer to six) that were originally in the $700s, marked down to like $120. Then I checked out lingerie: They have a lot of La Perla (miraculously, I found a matching set) and the supercute Marni lingerie, which, unfortunately, is still kind of pricey (like $49 for a thong). They also had some VPL, Passion Bait, Eres, and various other fancy stuff. Finally, I went to the shoe department. Now, I know a lot of girls go for the shoes first, but I prefer to go last because 1) shoes are my weakness, so if I go there first, that's where I'll blow my budget, and 2) if you get shoes first, you have to haul them around the whole store while you look at everything else. So, what do they have in the shoe department? Miu Miu, Christian Louboutin, Marc by Marc Jacobs, private label, some Prada, some Costume National, and quite a few of the Manolo Blahnik boots that kind of look like converse sneakers (they're $295--not bad for Manolos, however I think they're kind of ugly). Sorry, I didn't go to the men's department due to time constraints.

All in all, it's definitely worth checking out, although I'd suggest going at an off-time (like on a weekday afternoon, if you can). Usually after a week or so, things get marked down--plus they restock--so I'll definitely be making at least one more trip. I'll keep you posted...
Joy to the Upper West Side
In August, Barneys New York will open a Co-op store on Broadway, between 75th and 76th (very convenient to the 72nd St. express stop!). Read more about it here.

WWD: More Marc; DKNY, Reem Acra, Jill Stuart, and more; and an amusing review of the much-panned Bill Blass show.

NYP: A roundup.

Lookonline: An interesting analysis of designers and commerce.

And, of course, the Daily.

I fought the law and the law won
In (yesterday's) E! Fashion Police, Britney's stylist finally pulls through with a show-stopper; Beyonce gets back on track (no more jumpsuits!); Christina Aguilera does better with the dress, but not so much with the hair; and Madonna rocks the wait-listed Chanel spring 2004 trench (and E! makes fun of it, those ignorant bitches).

Where is Cheryl? Where is Cheryl? Here I am! Here I am!
Don't mind me; I've gone completely mad.
Sorry!
I'm on deadline, so things are a bit crazy here, and I have to run to my class at 5:30, so no postings today. Sorry! I will definitely make up for it tomorrow, I promise.

But before I go, I'd like to give a shout-out to Shandi, who kicked ass on America's Next Top Model last night. Woo-hoo!
Be mine
Unless you're completely oblivious, you know that Valentine's Day is next Saturday. Now, you can argue that Valentine's Day is totally commercialized (ahem, MW), but, hello, this is a shopping blog. Hence, cool stuff to buy for Valentine's Day, for you, for your lovah, for both of you, and for the single gals out there.

For both of you: A li'l Piper Heidsieck bubbly goes nicely with chocolates from Chocolate Bar, my favorite chocolate store.

For him: Nothing says metrosexual love like Burberry boxer shorts. (Get free shipping on a $100 order when you enter code AMOR4 at checkout.)

For you: I don't really get this Marc by Marc Jacobs Amour Fou (Crazy Love) tank top, but it's non-traditional, and cute nonetheless.

For the single gal: You don't need a man to buy you this Louis Vuitton Alma bag.

For both of you: A feather bed will make you never want to leave the bed, which, if you ask me, is a good thing.

For him: Hey, it's not totally romantic, but if you give him this Classic Grand Phone in red, he can play "Cold War President" and pretend to call Russia!

For you: I am in love with Cacharel's Amor Amor perfume; here, you get a cute bag too!

For the single gal: Dysfunctional or Dejected? Try Bittersweets.

For both of you: He can mark his territory with these I Love…undies.

For him: You can't go wrong with a cool leather cuff watch.

For you: Likewise, a semiprecious garnet necklace is a sure thing.

For the single gal: Men hate musicals, so take advantage of this golden opportunity and watch Chicago.
In the papers (and on the web)
NYT: For fall, expect eccentricity a la Camilla Nickerson, Vogue's editor at large. Also, Ginia Bellafante delivers a hearfelt appreciation of Helmut Newton. I've always been a huge fan of Newton's--to me, his photography has always been empowering of women, not misogynistic--and it's refreshing to see after all of the "controversial" labels applied to him upon his death last week. Plus: Proenza Schouler's eBay trunk show.

WWD: Hamish Morrow is leaving Krizia and Richard Tyler will design new uniforms for Delta Airlines. Now, as some of you know, I love stewardesses--not "flight attendants," as they've been called for the past 25 years, but stewardesses, the jet-setting hip chicks from the golden era of travel, the '60s and '70s. Stewardesses were hot and worldly, and they wore uniforms designed by Pucci, Bill Blass, and other top designers. Delta's spinoff airline, Song, has uniforms designed by Kate Spade, and Air France has Christian Lacroix, so I think it's great that Delta is following suit.

The Daily: Cool girls are going pixie chic. Plus: Fashion magazines' dress codes, a rather amusing, yet informative, article.
The week in shopping

In the bargain of the week, Replay's vintage distressed jeans are $15--down from $178. That's more than 90% off, for those of you who don't like math. A number of styles and washes are available, in all men's and women's sizes. Through 2/8; 10-7, noon-7 Sunday; 260 5th Ave. (28th and 29th Sts.).

All clearance items at Loehmann's are 50% off, plus some new arrivals are 25% off, through 2/16. 7th Avenue at 16th Street.

Finally, I went to Century 21 on Friday and boy, are they having a sale. You have to dig through the racks, but I saw some items by Costume National, See by Chloe, Plein Sud, Versace, Helmut Lang, and others, for $25 and less. No joke. They also have a bunch of new spring arrivals (well, mostly last year's spring collections, but you know what I mean), including a big ol' rack of Marni. Unfortunately, most of the Marni is still in the $150-$250 range. (My birthday is in a month and I'm a size 42, if anyone needs gift ideas. Just kidding. Well, maybe not...) They also had some cool stuff by Gaultier and Martin Margiela.
