Spring trends: mustard yellow + Thursday Moda Linkup

The sun is shining, the flowers are blooming, my allergies are going nuts, and thus I'm officially declaring May spring trend month here at Cheryl Shops. I'll be sharing what's on my shopping list for the season over the next few weeks, and first up is mustard yellow, which some people are calling the new millennial pink. That may be a bit of a stretch, as yellow tends to be a polarizing color, but I took this shade for a spin a few weeks ago and found it unexpectedly flattering. Here are some of my favorite takes on the trend.

1. This blazer doesn't seem like it should work—it's double-breasted, oversized, and, well, yellow—and yet it totally does. This is a statement piece for sure, but one that's very subtly done, thanks to the sharp tailoring.
Express double-breasted blazer $148

2. Shoes are a great way to wear this color if you fear it's not flattering on you, because they're pretty much the farthest thing away from your face. I love the twisty bow detail on these, and Sam Edelman shoes are almost always super comfy.
Sam Edelman Darian slides $110

3. It's hard to trace the beginning of a trend, but this sweater was definitely one of the pieces that propelled mustard yellow forward. It's probably too warm to wear it in most of the country for the foreseeable future...unless you live here in San Francisco, home of June gloom!
Ganni Julliard sweater $475

4. I have several Ulla Johnson dresses; they're very boho and feminine but very well made too. I think she had a certain person in mind for this one—and I can totally see that person wearing this—but the fabric and details are just gorgeous, even if you're not a movie star-slash-lifestyle guru.
Ulla Johnson Gwyneth dress $520

5. This bag covers two trends—the round shape and the color—at once, and like the shoes above, is a good way to try the trend without having to actually wear it.
Clare V. clutch $230

6. I was drawn to this top because it reminded me of a bodysuit I had in the early '90s. Being a little more fitted, it's a sexier take on the off-the-shoulder trend (which is still going strong), but the color is so bright, it could work for day as well as night.
Topshop Bardot top $40

7. How are these pants only $38? They seem incredibly flattering, in a I-want-to-get-them-in-every-color  kind of way. I love the length, the kick-flare, and the fit!
Topshop slim kick-flare trousers $38

8. Really, what's not to love about this skirt? The wrap styling is super flattering, the high-low length is just perfect, and the price is right too.
Thml wrap skirt $68

Here's how I wore the mustard yellow trend in my post last month

And now, onto the linkup! Remember Ada from my post a few weeks ago? It's her birthday, so she's partnered with a bunch of bloggers for a mega birthday linkup:

"Every year that I have been blogging, since I became a mom, I thought it would be fun to have a Blog Birthday Party on my blog, including other fashionistas and blogging friends. It started in 2013 and this is the 6th year of this fun birthday tradition. When I first started it in 2013 as a beginner, I invited my closest 5-6 blogging buddies who came to visit, read and comment my blog on a daily basis. Over the last 3 years this fun party has grown and it has become a two-day celebration. This year I am joined by another 20 fashionistas who I am lucky to call my friends and who are all super stylish to boots. A lot of these ladies have been celebrating my birthday with me on the blog other years too and I am very glad and flattered to see them return. Thank you beauties for making this tradition super fun, joyful and fashionable once again! Cheers with a Pinot Noir! Here is to another year of getting older and hopefully wiser!!"

Cool. Thanks for sharing style ideas for that color. I am always skeptical about that color and never know what to get to go with it. I really like #8 on the list and I really like how you styled your outfit. Thanks for sharing.

Cheryl, what a fabulous color choice and a super sophisticated outfit! Yellow is a color that makes me smile but one that I cannot wear near my face. But those slides and the cropped pants I could totally wear! I am right there with you on the allergy misery, by the way! Hang in there and carry tissues!

Yellow is one of my favorite colors, in all shades. I especially love mustard yellow. I will take one of each piece. I especially love the dress, wrap skirt and oversized blazer and I actually own identical cropped pants. Great picks and thank you for mentioning my birthday, your sweet words and this post!! =)
