7 ways to wear a denim jacket

In case you haven't been reading, listening to, or watching the news lately, pretty much the entire state of California is on fire at the moment. I am (thankfully) safe, but San Francisco is currently cloaked in unhealthy levels of smoke (the sky was literally orange on Wednesday) and unfortunately we can't go outside, which means we can't shoot a new post, and thus I don't have a new one for you this week. What I can offer, however, is a Cheryl's Greatest Hits featuring one of my favorite wardrobe items of all time, my Gap Icon denim jacket. The timing is actually quite good, because it's the perfect transitional piece—or, in my case, the perfect year-round layer. So without further ado, here are seven of my favorite ways to wear it.

With a little black dress

This post is over two years old, but it's one of my all-time favorites, and I still wear all of these pieces on the regular. The sneakers are what make the look really casual.

OUTFIT DETAILS: Gap jacket | IRO dress | Mansur Gavriel bucket bag | Golden Goose Superstar sneakers

With a slip skirt

This was one of last year's most popular posts, and it's a very "me" look, from the midi skirt to the Birkenstocks. Again, the combination of the super-casual shoes and the denim jacket prevent this look from feeling too dressy (or boring).

OUTFIT DETAILS: Gap jacket | Madewell shirt | Free People Normani skirt | Staud Bissett bag | Birkenstock Arizona big buckle sandals

With a shirtdress

I still wear all of these pieces constantly (see a pattern here?), and this the perfect example of a late-summer transitional look—or, in this case, what I wore to wine country.

OUTFIT DETAILS: Gap jacket | Gap shirtdress (similar here) | Sole Society hat (similar here) | Calla shoes (similar here

With a jumpsuit

One of the few pants-based looks here, this is actually one of the dressier outfits in this post, thanks to the accessories. The necklace and pouch are in frequent rotation, however the boots are (sadly) long gone.

OUTFIT DETAILS: Gap jacket | Mango jumpsuit (similar here) | Focalook necklace | Nordstrom pouch (similar here) | Jane and the Shoe boots (very old, sorry!)

With a tiered dress

I've been featuring this dress a lot lately—and now it's nearly sold out, unfortunately—but I love how the cut of this jacket helps contain the volume.

OUTFIT DETAILS: Gap jacket | H&M dress | Balenciaga city bag | Jambu Modena sandals

With a printed midi skirt

I'm wearing this skirt as I write this post, and with its combination of light layers, it's an ideal transitional look.

Gap jacket | Everlane sweatshirtIsabel Marant skirt | Keebos iPhone case | Birkenstock Arizona Eva sandals

With a maxi dress

Ok, one more dress—I'm realizing I have a formula of sorts, and I'll accept as my next challenge styling an outfit with this denim jacket...and pants. But in the meantime, here's another one of my favorite outfits so far this year.

Gap jacket | Isabel Marant Estine dress | Vintage belt | Céline phantom cabas tote | Hermès Oasis sandals

These outfits are all so good, Cheryl! I love a good roundup like this. Stay safe this weekend, we are definitely feeling the impacts of fires here in Seattle too. =( Hoping that we get some rain soon to clear everything up!

I hope you are having a great week!

These are all such great looks, Cheryl. I especially love that maxi dress! Here in SoCal the sky has been yellow with bits of ash so it's not too bad here along the coast by comparison. It is such a horrible turn of weather and fires. I'm glad you're safe and staying indoors. Take care.

What a great jacket and I love it with the Gap shirt dress and the leopard dress, too. Oh, stay safe. I've been watching all these fires on the news and it is just so very sad... like 2020 hasn't been awful enough with everything!

That is such a great denim jacket, it looks fantastic in every outfit and it works so well with dresses I can see why you'd wear that formula a few times! :)

Hope you are having a good weekend, and the air is a little cleaner for you :) Sadly I know from experience at the end of last year / start of this year that the smoke haze can be terrible - it made us all sick and it was a bit scary for the kids. And we were quite far from everything :(

We look 10 years younger than our real age due to wearing a denim jacket! Thank you, Cheryl, for the nice outfit idea!

I love all of these: I am looking forward to wearing my denim jackets in the next few months. I have really enjoyed wearing skirts lately and adding a denim jacket just adds that fun factor.

Cheryl, I love this post! However, I dislike the reason that you wrote this post. I do hope you are safe and healthy. What a scary thing. Onto the classic denim jacket...I am just like you. I rarely wear mine with pants. I love denim jackets paired with dressier or more unexpected garments like dresses and skirts. I even wore mine with a giant poofy ball gown! Thanks for sharing these fun looks and linking up with me.
