Everyone started wearing tie-dye sweatsuits last spring when we were all stuck inside, and a year later, just as the world is starting to reopen again, you'd think 2020 was the last thing we'd want to be reminded of. Wrong, apparently! Tie-dye still here, but it's become more mellow—now it's a way of life, rather than a reaction. There's something a little more pulled-together about a sweater, which is perhaps why I gravitated toward this one. The shape is very boxy and cropped; it's perfect for wearing with high-waisted, straight-leg jeans, which, sorry skinny jeans lovers, are here to stay. There is much roominess and forgiveness to the shape (I'm wearing my usual size small), but its waist-emphasizing length is also a reminder that, whew, it's time to reign in that quarantine wine-and-pasta habit. I wore this sweater to get my first vaccine shot, on a particularly happy Friday, and even on a random cold Monday when I needed cheering up because why is it still in the 50s in April?! I love the light colors (which I normally wouldn't think to put together), the big faux-tortoise buttons, and what this sweater represents: optimism.
This poor trench coat has been on the chopping block several times in the last few years (you last saw it with Spanx faux-leather leggings). Its lining is starting to shred, the cuff belts are long gone, and overall, it's not as crisp as it used to be. I remember buying this trench at Barneys in Seattle back in 2008, which makes this trench...yikes, 13 years old. Maybe it's finally time for a new one? That said, it's been a good one that was well worth the investment. A trench coat is one of those French woman clichés, but for good reason—it really is one of those timeless pieces that makes everything you're wearing look damn good. The good news is that A.P.C. still makes this same style, and when mine finally bites the dust, I'm definitely going to repurchase.
A friend of mine was recently complaining about an unflattering pair of straight-leg jeans, and for all the skinny jeans ride-or-dies out there, no one is making you switch. I, for one, could never quite make skinny jeans work, especially when they had the double-whammy of being skinny and low rise; I've almost always worn a slim straight leg because that's what looks best on me. These ReDone jeans (which you last saw about a year ago) are more of a Gen-Z-friendly stovepipe. Sean hates them, and they're probably not the most flattering pair I own (ok, that I know for sure), but they are so freaking comfortable and they make me look like I have a butt. I like having them in my rotation because they look better with more cropped tops such as this one. And did I mention how comfy they are? The funny thing is, I have a feeling straight-leg jeans are going to feel totally normal to us in 5 years and we'll all wonder why we made such a big fuss about the skinny vs. straight debate. Or maybe we'll all just be back in sweatpants by then. (Kidding!)
A happy outfit deserves happy accessories, so I grabbed my Mango straw bag for the first time this season (you last saw it with a shoulder-pad tee). There's something about a straw bag that just feels so summery, and I'm particularly fond of this one because it looks like Loewe (but was a fraction of the price). I'm glad to see Mango brought back a very similar version this year—that means I'll likely be featuring it a bunch. And speaking of repeats, I'm still wearing the daylights out of my furry mules (which, surprisingly, Sean does like, not that I'm dressing for him). You last saw them in Santa Barbara with a midi skirt, and I think I like them even more with jeans. These mules seem so wrong on so many levels, but something about them is just so right. And that brings me joy.
