An honest review of Spanx straight leg jeans

It can safely be said that y'all love Spanx. I certainly do too—my jeans, faux leather joggers, and pants are among the most worn pieces in my wardrobe. But I recently acquired a pair of their new ankle straight leg jeans, and let me tell you, I think I have a new favorite. And while I just did an honest review last week, I figured it's never too soon for another one (especially since you, dear readers, seem to particularly love them). Spanx sent these jeans to me for free, but as always, the opinions in this review are 100% my own. Here are my honest and unfiltered thoughts on Spanx straight leg jeans

The straight leg jean

For the first time in over 10 years, straight-leg jeans are poised to take over as the top-selling cut of denim in the USA, finally ending the skinny jean's long and prosperous reign. Personally, I've always been a fan of a straight leg—it's way more flattering on my bony-ankled body than a skinny jean, and the slimmer leg opening is more manageable and versatile than a flare—so I'm glad this workhorse cut is finally getting its due. Note: there are many variations on the straight leg, from low-slung and slim to high-waisted and loose; the Spanx version is, in my opinion, the best iteration possible. It's a classic straight-leg jean that's just right.

The fabric

Like most Spanx pants, the straight-leg jean has an elastic waistband and the fabric is super stretchy: in this case a 91% cotton/7% polyester/2% Lycra blend with a hidden shaping panel that's a polyester/cotton blend. The back pockets and belt loops are functional; the front pockets are decorative, which is fine, because you wouldn't want to undo all of the smoothing from the shaping panel by stuffing a ton of junk in your pockets. As for the wash, it's the lightest of all the Spanx jeans I own—it's a slightly faded vintage look—and it's also my favorite. It doesn't feel quite as dressy as the darker wash of the flare jeans, but I feel like it goes with more things. BTW, I would totally get these in white if Spanx were to start offering that color. (Are you listening, Spanx?)

The fit

The straight leg jean runs true to size. I ordered my regular Spanx size, which is medium (I'm almost always a US 6 or 28 in denim), and they fit perfectly, just as all my other Spanx pants do. The waistband is pretty wide, but it does not dig into my waist; it hits just below my natural waistline, although you can kind of make it higher or lower depending on your waist-hip ratio—that's the beauty of stretch! I am wearing the regular-length inseam, which is 26.5 inches, and it's perfect for wearing with flats or low heels, as it hits right at my ankle. (I'm 5' 7" for reference.) This pair is available in three inseams—regular, petite, and tall—and in sizes XS-3X, however they are sold out of quite a few sizes at the moment. Let's hope Spanx restocks, because this is a style that is made for everybody!

My honest review

This is hands down my favorite pair of Spanx jeans yet. The cut is the most classic, the wash is the most versatile, and the overall effect is the most flattering, at least on me. I wear these to work with a blazer and shirt, as I've styled them here, and I wear them around the house on the weekend with a T-shirt and Birkenstocks. They are perfect for traveling—they're now my go-to pair of airplane jeans—and the best part is they're super stretchy and comfortable comfortable, but no one knows they're Spanx. Unless you tell them, of course ;)
