What I wore in New York

I just got back from a weeklong trip to NYC, which felt like such a luxury. While it's been almost 12 years (!!!) since I've moved away, we tend to go back to visit at least once a year, however those trips are usually much shorter—I'd say three or four days on average, usually for a long weekend or a quick work trip. The pace of this stay felt much less intense, as I didn't feel the need to rush around and see everything on my list, although New York was its energetic, vibrant self as always. According to friends, it was also the first stretch of good weather they've had so far this season, and while it rained several days when we were there, it was so nice to be out walking around in the sunshine—walking is always one of my favorite things to do while I'm in NYC, and I averaged 18,000 steps a day(!). That said, packing for this trip was somewhat of a challenge due to the changing weather, so I broke one of my travel rules and decided to check a bag (it was a direct flight so I wasn't worried). I ended up overpacking a bit, but it was good to have options, and even better to have room in my suitcase for all the shopping I did. Here's what I wore on my trip to New York.

Butter yellow blazer, striped tee & crochet skirt

I've been shopping secondhand a lot recently, so you'll be seeing more and more of it here. This blazer was my way to try the butter yellow color that's been trending this spring; while I got a compliment from a stranger on this outfit, it did feel a little bright for Soho, where we were staying. It was also so warm, I had to ditch the jacket by lunchtime. But I think I will get a lot of wear out of this skirt, and the shoes are from my former coworker Tamar's company Bells & Becks—the kitten heel is super comfy, and I love the sculptural detail on the toe. All of her shoes are made in Italy and they are gorgeous

Rock-and-roll tee & slip skirt

This look also got a compliment from a woman behind me in line for the restroom at dinner! And it also features a secondhand piece—when I saw slip skirts were trending for spring thanks to The Row, I figured I could find one on the resale market; this is Aerie via ThredUp, and it's a somewhat crinkly fabric that's perfect for traveling. I wish it were a few inches shorter, but otherwise it's perfect. Because the skirt's waistband was too flimsy to properly tuck the tee in, I used a styling trick I recently learned: tie a hair elastic around the hem to cinch it, then flip the knot underneath to hide the tail. This outfit would have looked cooler with my Isabel Marant dad sandals instead of Birkenstocks, but I packed the latter knowing it was going to rain quite a bit on our trip, and the EVA Birks are obviously waterproof!

Blazer, tee & drawstring pants

Pajama-inspired pants are a huge thing right now, thanks primarily to The Row, and I figured NYC of all places was a good venue to take the trend on a test run. I had planned to wear these on the plane but ended up wearing my jeans because they took up more room in my suitcase; this pair is so lightweight, they fold up into barely nothing, and as a bonus, the crinkly texture does not require an iron or steamer once you pull them out. It was pouring rain on the day I wore them; I can confirm the fabric dries very quickly, although these are a bit long on me and the hem got super soaked, which in turn made the pants drag even more. I am taking these on my next trip but will plan to wear them with more of a heel!

Blazer, crochet dress & sneakers

This day started with a downpour and ended with gorgeously clear skies; I utilized Allison Bornstein's "wrong shoe theory" and wore a sneaker instead of an expected heel, which was the right choice in terms of both aesthetics and comfort. I was worried that I'd be a little underdressed for the ballet, but I found the crowd was dressed way more understated than it tends to be for the ballet in San Francisco and yes, I was just as surprised about that as you are!

Blazer, button-down & ruffle skirt

I scored this skirt at the Isabel Marant sample sale (it matches exactly with the top I'm wearing in this post!), which was happening literally right around the corner from our hotel, and I couldn't wait to wear it—so I paired it with the black blazer I ended up wearing nearly every day of the trip and a black shirt to make it feel a little more polished. I spent most of the day shopping and later met up with a friend; while this outfit is very "me," I felt a little out of place in Bergdorf Goodman, where everyone else was dripping in high-end designer everything. Again, I wish I had brought my Isabel Marant dad sandals, but otherwise I was happy with it.

Blazer, blouse & jeans

It was pouring rain again on this day, and while everyone kept remarking about how chilly it was, it was nowhere near as cold as when it rains in San Francisco, so I was able to get away with wearing just a blazer with a gauzy top underneath (I've worn this one before and it's one of my favorites, however it doesn't photograph anywhere near as beautifully as it looks in person). I was happy with my waterproof loafers even though they gave me a blister, however I would not recommend wearing jeans in such heavy rain—I had to go back to the hotel and blow-dry them before I went back out for dinner! Such a rookie move. But at least my Yankees cap made me feel like a local again.
