What I wore in Northern Italy & Puglia

When I went to Italy last year, I somehow managed to pack for 12 days in a carry-on. It was quite a bit warmer on that trip, so I suppose my wardrobe was more on the skimpier side, but honestly, I don't know how I did it. For this two-week trip, we planned to hit a few cities in northern Italy before meeting up with friends in Puglia (yes, again!). And while the weather in Italy tends to be absolutely lovely in May, it had been unseasonably cold with some light rain, which made packing a challenge. I also knew I wanted to do some shopping this time, so I acquiesced and checked a bag. I'm glad I did—more details on where I shopped coming next week, but in the meantime, here's (almost) everything I wore on my 14-day trip to Italy last month.

First day in Venice
My pro tip is to always stash the outfit you're planning to wear when you arrive in your carry-on, so you can pull it out quickly and change without unpacking your entire suitcase first. I wore the tee and pointelle cardigan on the plane with a blazer and comfy pants, then had the skirt ready to go. I wore my new Birkenstocks on the plane as well, but note that the thong does not work well if you're also wearing compression socks!

Second day in Venice
I'd only been to Venice once before—and just for a day at that—so on this trip, we really covered the entire city in about 48 hours. I'm talking 30,000 steps a day, which was definitely a new record for me. So for that, I was really glad I wore sneakers!

Venice to Bologna
We decided to leave a gondola ride for our last morning in Venice...at which point we found ourselves competing with a bunch of day-trippers. We finally got lucky (it was definitely worth it for the experience!) and by divine intervention made it to the train station in time to catch our train to Bologna.

The rain finally caught up with us for an hour or so in Bologna, and the weather really cooled down, so I added my pointelle cardigan back on (see, I told you I really got a lot of wear out of it!).

Second day in Bologna
I was a little chilly the previous day, so I over-indexed on layers the next day and spent most of the afternoon feeling sweaty and cranky. (I know, I could have gone back to the B&B and changed, but I wanted to sightsee!) That said, I did love this outfit, and I wore a variation of it a few days later.

Bologna to Florence
There was a convention in Bologna and we couldn't get a taxi to the train station; Roberto, who ran our B&B, was kind enough to give us a ride so we didn't miss our train to Florence. Once again, luck was on our side, both in terms of making our train and the rain staying away (although it did catch up with us on our way to dinner later that night).

Second day in Florence
You may recognize the top I'm wearing in the photo above and the skirt I'm wearing here from my NYC shopping recap; obviously I was hot to take my new purchases on vacation! The matching top and skirt are kind of a lot together, but the blazer helped tone them down, plus it ended up being the perfect layer for the pleasantly cool weather as well.

Third day in Puglia
Whoops, we did not capture what I wore to go from Florence to Puglia (but it was basically what I wore the second day in Bologna, just with a different top) or on our second day in Puglia. To be honest, I was too busy catching up with my dear friends that I hadn't seen in almost three years. It was also windy AF (apparently so windy that Saharan sand was blowing across the Mediterranean to Greece!) so not ideal outfit-photographing conditions. Thankfully on our third day, the weather was glorious, so I broke out the one pair of shorts I brought for our day trip to Lecce, a.k.a. the Florence of the south.

Fourth day in Puglia
Now we're talking: tank top and miniskirt weather—although, yes, I threw on my go-to pointelle cardigan here because the weather started to cool off around golden hour when we shot this. Now's a good time to note that I usually try to wear all of my bottoms at least twice on a trip, and I definitely stuck to that rule here. Then again, this is one of my all-time favorite Isabel Marant miniskirts (and I own many)!

Fifth day in Puglia
You may recognize this dress from last year's Italy content; I rarely get to wear it here in San Francisco, so I was excited to break it out on vacation again. On this day, we finally got to go to the beach, and afterward we visited the town of Gallipoli on the Mediterranean side of Puglia. Highly recommend stopping by the Salentum Profumi store!

Sixth day in Puglia
We didn't make it to Grottaglie, the ceramics center of Puglia, last year, so Sean & I made a concerted effort to go there this time. It was a very long drive, but totally worth it (although one of the platters I bought broke in my luggage, wahhhh). It was a little cooler on this day, so I was back on my layering game.

Last day in Puglia
I'm sorry I don't have a better photo of this outfit; to be honest, we did a wine tasting after eating only a light breakfast, so I was schnackered for most of the afternoon. That said, I bought this top in Florence and really wanted to wear it so I decided to break it out for our last day. It totally fits in with the Mother Mermaid vibe I'm cultivating for summer, and I can't wait to wear it again.
