Sample Sale of the Week: Barneys Warehouse Sale

It's more crowded than the F train, most of the merch is dirty and/or old, and until the markdowns start, the prices are no lower than the final round of sales in store. And yet, every season, I traipse off to the Barneys New York Warehouse Sale in search of fashion valhalla. Sometimes I am lucky (Lanvin flats for under $100!), sometimes I am not. Still, it's worth it: Prices start at 50-75% off and can go up to 95% off by the final weekend. Ladies, take a small purse (otherwise you'll have to check it) and please wear modest undergarments, because everyone in the store is going to see them if you try anything on. Good luck and godspeed. It starts Thursday 8/19, with hours 8 a.m.-9 p.m. the first two days; 10-9 weekdays and 10-7 weekends thereafter. 8/19-9/6; 255 W. 17th St. (7th & 8th Aves.).

And online this Friday, 8/20, Gilt Groupe is partnering with Target for a first-ever preview of their upcoming masstige collections from Mulberry, Tucker by Gaby Basora, and John Derian. This is awesome, because those collections hit stores October 10th, September 12th, and September 5th, respectively. If you are not yet a member of Gilt Groupe (to which I say, really?), click here to join.
Weekend of Cheryl part 1: Cheryl Shops the Barneys Warehouse Sale
So, while I am technically able to leave at 1 p.m. on Fridays during the summer, for the last month or so, I've been chained to my desk at work. This is because I have to work on all of our make-or-break Fall Fashion events; the timing is quite inconvenient however. At the beginning of the summer, I had made a list of all the fun things I wanted to do on my summer Friday afternoons, but due to my schedule, I clearly didn't get around to doing everything. So I decided to leave somewhat on time last Friday and cram as much as possible into one weekend--and to call it the Weekend of Cheryl. It ended up being somewhat of a failure.

My first stop was the Barneys Warehouse sale. I decided to wait a week, as I had back in February, because I wanted that additional markdown, and I didn't want to deal with the hysteria of the opening-weekend crowds. I scored quite the bounty back in February; this time, not so much. I spotted some Vena Cava dresses, lots of Helmut Lang pants, still some Kate Moss Topshop blouses and dresses, and some Marc by Marc Jacobs here and there. In the fancy section, there was quite a bit of Nina Ricci, Comme des Garcons, and Lanvin, all of which, at 30% off lowest prices, was still far too expensive. There were a lot of shoes--Prada, Pierre Hardy, Stella McCartney--but, again, still out of my reach (plus, many of the styles are still available, at the same prices, on Barneys.com, and if you decide you don't want them, you can actually still return them). I tried on an incredibly ill-fitting Mayle dress, a 3.1 Phillip Lim sweater (or was it a tunic--I couldn't tell), and a blouse by Lover that made me look like a court jester. All rejects. I ended up with just two items: a long-sleeved white tee from The Row (and let me tell you, The Row is definitely Olsen-sized--my tee is a large, and it is snug) and a long organic wool cardigan from Loomstate. (Side note: I never realized how nice Loomstate is--now I understand why Barneys promotes the crap out of it.) I was a little sad about my poor haul, but, you know, you win some and you lose some. Call me crazy, but I'm actually considering going back Thursday after work, just to see what kinds of mega-bargains I can find.

Coming tomorrow, parts 2 and 3 of the Weekend of Cheryl saga!

There's an age-old theory that when the economy gets rough, hemlines get longer. Considering all of the mortgage and housing-market troubles of the past few months, it's amazing that no one has brought up the adage until know; but, lo and behold, Suzy Menkes addresses the lowering skirts in today's Times. While I am always happy to show my legs, I could go for longer skirts, especially since it feels like we've been wearing minis for, oh, 10 years or so. All good things must come to an end, I suppose.

On a happier note, mark your calendars: Racked reports that Barneys Warehouse Sale is happening in Chelsea Thursday, August 14th through Monday, September 1st. (After my successful foray in February, I've decided to wait a week before going.) Of course, if you prefer being waited on by real salespeople and having a fitting room in which to change, the final sale is still happening in Barneys stores through the end of the month.
Cheryl Shops...the Barneys Warehouse Sale
I must admit, I was a little nervous about going to the Barneys Warehouse Sale so late in the game--I almost always either go on the first or second day, but thanks to my Black Flu of Death, I had to wait until today. But I'm glad I did, because today's haul was one of my all-time best. Not only was it not ridiculously crowded, but there was plenty of merch, and everything was onto its first round of additional markdowns. There are two huge racks of Kate Moss for Topshop, all of which is an additional 50% off; the ready-to-wear (I saw lots of Marc by Marc Jacobs, Loomstate, 3.1 Phillip Lim, and Daryl K) is an additional 25% off; and the designer racks are a whopping 40% off (think Lanvin, Prada, Proenza Schouler, and Narcisco Rodriguez; I saw a Rochas jacket so beautiful it made my eyes tear up, but even after four markdowns, it was still $800). Sadly, the shoes have not been marked down again, and to all of you who've been complaining about the lack of selection, you are some tough-ass customers, because I wear a very popular size (8.5) and I saw at least three pairs that I would've bought, were it not for their prohibitively high price tags. Here's what I did buy:

Lutz & Patmos black cardigan, designed by Julianne Moore
KA7 open-front camel bouclé cardigan
High-waisted Alexander Wang black trousers
3.1 Phillip Lim shift dress, in navy with gold piping
3.1 Phillip Lim high-waisted khaki trousers
American Vintage green T-shirt dress

And would you believe I spent less than $500? I did! If that's not convincing enough, I'll try again: GO. NOW. While I kind of blew my Barneys budget, I'm tempted to go back again next week, just to see what kind of treasures I might find. But one thing is for certain: I am never going to the sale on the opening day ever again.
Barneys Warehouse Sale starts Thursday!
I won't be going for several days, due to the fact that I have the Black Plague*, but if you want to save 50%-75% on Balenciaga, Lanvin, Marc Jacobs, and all of the other fancy labels they carry, head on over to Chelsea for the Barneys Warehouse Sale. Feel free to report what you bought in the comments section below! 2/14-3/2; 8-9 tomorrow and Friday, 10-9 weekdays and 10-7 weekends thereafter; 255 W. 17th St. (7th & 8th Aves.).

*Sorry for the lack of posts this week--I have a really, really nasty case of the flu. Rest assured, I am glugging my codeine-laced cough syrup and will be back in full effect next week.
Cheryl Shops...the Barneys Warehouse Sale
I finally hit the Barneys sale on Friday after work; apparently the rest of the city has summer Fridays as well, because the sale was no less crowded than usual. In other words, it was mass chaos. But I will say this: I think the sale was the best one I've been to in awhile. The designer section--which is normally one rack at the end by the shoes for a few days, then gets folded into the regular merchandise--is much expanded and moved to a separate area over by the windows; it was filled with lots of Lanvin, Marni, Prada Sport, and other pretty good stuff, all things considered. I had to talk myself out of a $89 pair of Balenciaga pants; they were too big and would've cost me at least that much in tailoring, but they were gorgeous nonetheless. As for the main racks, I hit them in search of KA7, Daryl K, and 3.1 Phillip Lim, and I was successful in all but the last (I got a Daryl K dress, a KA7 sweater dress, and a KA7 top). What surprised me the most, however, was the shoe department. I often have no luck there whatsoever, but this time I had to whittle my options down. I ended up with a pair of yellow suede Prada flats; they're kind of jolie-laide, but I love them.

The sale runs through Labor Day, but according to this post on Racked, the best stuff comes out this week. Interesting indeed.
I did not go to the Barneys Warehouse Sale today...
But the lovely ladies from Racked and Fashionista did. Read their reports here and here, respectively. Or for a snobbier take, Almost Girl was put off by the "crowds of non-industry women" at the sale. (Nice, Julie.) For the record, I've been exhausted all week, so I decided sleep was more important than first dibs on the sale. But I'm definitely going to go tomorrow after work, and I will post a special report sometime this weekend--I promise.
