The most flattering white jeans I've found

I feel like my wardrobe is on the brink of a major transformation. It’s something that’s been brewing for awhile, thanks to ongoing Kondo-ing of my closet, but I think it’s about to come to fruition. I started a new job a few months ago; it’s creative, but in a corporate environment, and I’m now at a level where I’m feeling like I need a certain level of polish. It’s not necessarily dressiness; it’s more dressing to align with the authority of my position. I’ve found that I’m gravitating more toward a blazer-blouse-jeans combination, and when I wear skirts, midi suits me better. I’m not going to ditch all of my beloved minis, but I definitely need to pare down my collection, and probably confine them to the weekend. That is a rather lengthy lead-in to this post, but it sets the direction that my outfit posts will be moving toward. I never want to be the person to say what you should and shouldn’t wear at a certain age; I always say wear what makes you feel good—and at this point in my life, I’m feeling good in more tailored, polished things.

Cheryl Shops...Old Navy
You have to admire Old Navy--under new creative director Todd Oldham, they're desperately trying to shed the frumpy-campy image of yore in favor of a more fashion-driven focus, along the lines of Forever 21 and H&M. They're not quite there yet, but they're trying. I stopped by the Atlantic Center store today on my way home just to check things out, and their current campaign, "pattern play," definitely has a colorful, Palm Beachy vibe, just in time for spring break. I have a strapless maxi dress that I bought last year at Old Navy and this green style definitely caught my eye; unfortunately, it must've caught other people's eyes too, since it was sold out at the store and is nearly gone online, however it is available in a pink and a black print.

I didn't see a lot in the store, but online, there are a lot of great peasant tops and dresses, which I love to wear out at night when in tropical locales. This embroidered tunic will look great with a simple pair of sandals (like these) and a tan, and the embroidery is far more luxe than you'd expect from, well, Old Navy.

But some of my favorite pieces were the jewelry, many of which looked like Kenneth Jay Lane knockoffs. The enameled snake bracelet and free-form ring are awesome, but my favorite is the bamboo bangle--at $7.50 each, you can buy a bunch and stack 'em on your wrist like a glamazon.

Thankfully, my high school girlfriends and I are planning a little warm-weather getaway--and it's never too early to start shopping for a vacation, right?
Buy it: Old Navy's fleece babydoll hoodie
I'm a firm believer in sticking to what you know. Yes, taking risks has its place, but when it comes to fashion, I think it's more interesting when designers find new ways to interpret their stylistic signatures (i.e. Chanel), rather than radically changing their aesthetic every several seasons (like Prada). And while I might make fun of West Coast designers for their jeans-and-tee simplicity, well, really no one does it better. Take, for example, Mike & Chris, a relatively new line of hoodies, hoodies, and more hoodies. While they create these marvelous pieces in myriad silhouettes and a variety of fabrics, I think their most famous style is the Bailey, a babydoll hoodie jacket in fleece. Such mastery of the form comes at a price, however, and the Bailey's is $308, which would not be too inconceivable if the coat were made out of, say, wool, instead of a cotton/poly blend.

Which is why you should buy this $30 hoodie coat from Old Navy. True, it doesn't have the detail or the fit present in Mike & Chris' version, but it's supersoft and conveys the same general idea. For layering fanatics, it's a dream; I'm going to bust mine out as soon as the temperature drops into the 60s. In case the website is sold out--which it appeared to be in danger of doing as I was writing this--head over to the Soho Old Navy; that's where I got mine (in gray). And, hey, if anyone knows fleece, it's Old Navy. Now, if only they'd knock off Mike & Chris's leather hoodie...
