Anyway, while I was in State College, PA, last weekend, of all places, I happened upon the best sale rack ever, which had all manner of gray, black, and dark-rinse skinny and straight-leg jeans (clearly skinnies didn't go over so well in Central Pennsylvania). I tried on J Brand (which still don't fit me), Habitual (which I liked a lot, but were actually more of a boot-cut), and Earnest Sewn, which I had tried before, but, miraculously, all of a sudden, fit me beautifully. The pair I ended up getting is the Decca, which is a straight-leg (the much-hyped Harlan is a true skinny). They are incredibly flattering, not ass-tight, and are so soft, they feel like I've owned them for years. Of course, I wish I had known this a few weeks ago, when Earnest Sewn had their sample sale. Well, there's always next time. In the meantime, eLuxury has a few Deccas on markdown here and here. Revolve Clothing also has some here. So, I eat my words and hereby endorse Earnest Sewn. Buy it: Earnest Sewn jeans

MasstigeWatch!
Hey, have you heard Kate Moss designed a collection for Topshop? (Note: heavy sarcasm.) I was indeed one of the people on Topshop's website Monday night--the collection hit UK stores Tuesday at midnight--but gave up after I discovered nothing my size was in stock. There's still some stuff left on Topshop's website, like this strappy metallic dress or the studded corset belt, but the good stuff--the dresses, the vests, the sparkly jersey tops--went almost instantly. So I'm waiting until next Wednesday, when the collection pops up at Barneys stores across the country. I'm anticipating being very late to work on Wednesday; thankfully my boss is out of the country.
In other Masstige news, Target has announced that Alice Temperley is the next Go International designer, that is, after Patrick Robinson's collection debuts on May 6th and Libertine's line hits on Labor Day. Temperley's collection will have a holiday focus, so that means many cute print dresses for winter! Yay!

America's Next Top Model recap
You know, I totally forgot to comment last week on Brittany's "short-term memory loss" (irony intended) on America's Next Top Model, but Dionne beat me to it this week, pointing out that Brittany's memory loss certainly wasn't a problem during the acting challenge. Aha! So with all this focus on Brittany so early in the episode, it was quite obvious that she was the one marked for elimination. And the go-see challenge confirmed it: As the other girls dashed about and sweet-talked the clients, Brittany seemed slow and out of it (which was perhaps reinforced by the loopy music that was not-so-subtly playing in the background). And when she was late returning to the agency, Brittany pitched a huge fit, complete with cursing. Not so professional. Then again, neither was Dionne's hustling for clothes, and I was surprised that that never came up at the judging. But Jaslene finally won the challenge (yay!), although her prize was a bizarre photo shoot with Nigel on top of a bridge. Uh, okay. Speaking of photo shoots, I actually enjoyed this week's concept--Tyra takes a sexy photo for a women's magazine, guy photographer takes a sexy photo for a men's magazine--and the girls looked awesome, no crazy makeup, costumes, props, or captions. Note to Tyra: More photo shoots like this, please! So while Brittany's was awesome, as usual, and Dionne's was mediocre, as usual, Brittany was no match for her own craziness and had to go. And I must say, after seeing Brittany's wonky runway walk, I agree with that decision. Dionne at least has a bit of sass.
Next week, the dreaded "culture" episode (damn! I thought we were going to avoid it this time!). Plus, poor Natasha has a cold and Renee, ever the conniver, plots her demise. Drama!

Mother's Day gift guide
Here's where I could trot out a bunch of clichés, like what do you get for the woman who has everything? Or, what do you give to the woman who gave you life? But there will be none of that here. Truth is, my mom is incredibly hard to shop for, and I'll bet yours is too. But here are some options that may not exactly make a profound statement about your existence on the planet, but will at least hopefully say, "Mom, you're awesome."
For the mom who likes to redecorate
Funny story: My friend NP and I found out our moms have the same interior decorator when their artwork got mixed up and both flipped out about it; I could barely tell the difference between the two paintings, and when I'm at NP's house, I can squint my eyes and feel like I'm at home. This Luxury Houses: Country coffee table book, on the other hand, is sure to give Mom some fresh new ideas.
For the jet-setting mom
To Florida for the winter, up north in the summer, plus side trips to visit friends in Santa Fe, San Francisco, Paris...this Hideo Wakamatsu Blossom suitcase from Flight 001 will ensure Mom doesn't spend half her vacation waiting at the baggage carousel.
For the absent-minded mom

I spent last weekend in South Beach, Miami, for my dear friend MM's bachelorette party, and having eaten, tanned, and drank to gluttonous levels, I'd highly recommend it as a girls' weekend destination. Unusually for me, I did very little shopping over the weekend (aside from a Mango store, a Barneys Coop, and a few other chain stores, South Beach has a disproportionate amount of Eurotrashy shops). But while I was having my heavenly massage at the Delano's excellent Agua spa, my masseuse wrapped me in the softest, fluffiest blanket I've ever felt. So of course I had to buy one. My blanket is made by Kashwére, a company dedicated to achieving the softness of cashmere with the durability of synthetics (my blanket is made from microfiber). So I was happy to discover their website, which sells not only my blanket (and I'm happy to report that I paid even less for it at the Delano than the price listed here), but all manner of clothing, accessories, furniture, and decorative items for the home--everything from sweaters to sofas. Based on the softness of my blanket, I am tempted to buy one of everything, but because of the prices (hey, you get what you pay for!), I will refrain. Still, some items are simply irresistible, like this robe, which, if I bought, I'm almost certain I'd never want to change out of in the morning.
Ditto for these slippers, which are clearly from the Ugg school of ugly comfort.
I tend to knit baby blankets and hats as gifts, but if I'm feeling lazy, I could substitute this adorable cap and blanket set without a guilty conscience.
But my dream item is this slipcovered chaise. Just imagine sinking into it and feeling like you're floating on a soft, fluffy microfiber cloud.
Seriously, though, I think if you ever got me into this thing, you'd never get me out. But that's okay, because I'd be wearing my Cashwére robe and slippers, with my throw blanket on my lap. And I think I'd be in a microfiber coma. But a blissful one.

Five semi-interesting bits of info from this week's America's Next Top Model recap episode

2. Speaking of Jael, her rivalry with Renee went further than Renee's bizarre Jael-in-straightjacket sketch and post-party argument. Still, Jael was awesome with Renee's son, which means that if Jael can't get work as a model, perhaps she'd make a good babysitter. Er, maybe not.

4. Whitney is a big ham. I mean personality-wise. Geez!
5. Natasha got her tooth pulled without painkillers. If that's not badass, I don't know what is.

Spring Shopping Guide: Embellished Headbands
Another spring trend we can thank Marc Jacobs for is the embellished headband--he sent superawesome versions down the runway, many with oversized, almost cheap-looking fake jewels. Based on your glue-gun savvy, you can DIY one in your own home for about $10, or you can go with one of the fancier versions here. The nice thing about embellished headbands, though, is that you don't have to spend a lot of money on one. Here are some of my favorite options.
Then again, if you want to go straight-up Marc, Intuition has some awesome knockoffs, no glue gun required. These jeweled headbands are silk, ensuring that they won't mat or tangle your hair.
This beautiful Stacey Lapidus braided headband is a more subtle take on the trend, but up close, it's a big ol' sparkly party, complete with Swarovski crystals.
This wide feather headband makes the model look like she has a dead bird on her head, so I suggest wearing it with your hair pulled back. I love it regardless--very Alexander McQueen.

After all, you need something to wear over all those full-shaped dresses and tops. Or, babydoll jackets are yet another way to try out the voluminous trend. You can pair them with everything from pencil skirts to miniskirts and both wide-leg or skinny pants. And, yes, the full shape disguises a multitude of flaws. But the best part about babydoll jackets is no matter what your price range, there are several supercute options.

I love See by Chloe because the line interprets regular Chloe's awesome city-bohemian aesthetic but with a not-so-hefty price tag. This babydoll jacket is not exactly cheap, but a similar one from the full-price line would be roughly twice the price.
This Stella McCartney cropped jacket comes with a belt, but I actually prefer it without. It's taffeta too, which is a fancy fabric for such a trendy jacket, but that means it automatically dresses up anything you're wearing. (It's also nearly sold out, so if you like it, order now.)
I love the sweet look and intricate detail in this Ernestine jacket from Alice Ritter--it looks more expensive than it is.

This dramatic Jill Stuart Manifique Olivia jacket is almost Victorian-looking; I love the bell sleeves, and the fact that this is satin makes it appropriate for day or night.
This canvas jacket from Trovata carries a nautical inspiration; and while I have trouble with white, I think the oversized buttons alone make it worth the fuss.
This pretty Rebecca Taylor embroidered hopsack jacket has just enough yellow detail to be flattering on a wide range of skin types, and for those who can't give up the girly, it's very feminine too.

Forever 21's Candace jacket reminds me of one that Sienna Miller has been photographed in like a gazillion times. Also, I think it's nice to wear a bold color like red in the summertime--imagine how hot this would look with a turquoise tank underneath.
Urban Outfitters has a lot of great babydoll jackets, but I think this one from Lux is my favorite. It looks like a Mike & Chris style, but is way more affordable.
But my favorite option of all is this babydoll jacket--it's in terrycloth, which I think is a fun choice of fabrics. Probably not work-appropriate, but maybe you can get away with it when your boss is on vacation.

Much like the ubiquitous trapeze dress this spring, T-shirt dresses have a superloose shape, are incredibly comfortable, and enable you to eat whatever you want without suffering from tight waistband syndrome. But unlike trapeze dresses, I think these tee-inspired styles are more appropriate for weekend wear.

I think much of the T-shirt dress trend can be attributed to Marc Jacobs' breezy, easygoing spring collection, which included many layered jersey beauties like this tunic dress with tank detail. Expensive, yes, but exquisitely detailed.
Another runway look that you're sure to see on many stylish ladies this season is this 3.1 Philip Lim Rosette dress--it's sold out everywhere in white, but I actually prefer the black--it's more durable (I have an impossible time keeping white clean) and you can probably get at least three seasons' worth of wear from it.
And one more runway look is this asymmetrically shirred striped dress from Peter Som. It has a bit more shape to it than many of this kind, and as long as it's not skintight, it has the potential to be incredibly flattering.

The most affordable dress Miu Miu has made in years, this oversized T-shirt dress doesn't even look like a tee, and the drop-waist shape will last you well into fall, when the '20s flapper silhouette will really take hold.
Less fussy than the last Philip Lim dress and more affordable than the Marc Jacobs, this draped tunic dress, also from 3.1, is supershort, but long on style.
A sexier take on the trend, Bread and Butter's jersey dress has a low back and a more clingy fit.

The funny thing is, as simple as the T-shirt dress appears, it hasn't filtered down to the lower-priced stores yet. So this MK2K jersey scoopneck dress isn't a super-bargain, but it looks comfy and the empire-waist seam gives it a nice bit of structure.
This Daftbird tunic dress is inspired by girls wearing their boyfriends' tees, which makes perfect sense to me. (Try to ignore the fact that the model looks about 13 years old.)

America's Next Top Model recap
I'd like to have a moment of silence for Jael, quite possibly the kookiest America's Next Top Model contestant ever (and that's saying something). Obviously doomed from the start, Jael drew the ire of both Twiggy and Nigel early on, in spite of being championed by Ms. Tyra herself. Jael didn't really photograph well, and appeared totally strung out (but endearingly so) in person, so the fact that she couldn't deliver a Cover Girl commercial was really the nail in the coffin. I mean, could you really see Jael the "anarchist" doing those weekly "My life as a Cover Girl" spots? Exactly. Although I nearly lost my shit when I saw Jael frolicking amidst the chickens on the shoot. I also nearly lost it when Renee busted out the Steve Irwin accent during her commercial, a touching yet hilarious homage (may he rest in peace). The other thing that really made me laugh was when, upon learning they'd be traveling to Australia, Jaslene said, "I've only been to the hood and around the corner." That was genius. I'm glad the girls are in Australia for their little trip; hopefully the challenge with Australian slang will be all we'll see of the annoying "cultural" bits Tyra throws in to seem worldly. Speaking of which, I love Natasha. She may be a mail-order bride, but she's a damn smart one. If she's not in the top three, I'll be shocked.
Next week is the midseason recap episode, which normally I'd be annoyed about, but they're usually filled with wonderful little chestnuts, and with the crazy gals on the show this season, I'm expecting many, many laughs.
I'd like to have a moment of silence for Jael, quite possibly the kookiest America's Next Top Model contestant ever (and that's saying something). Obviously doomed from the start, Jael drew the ire of both Twiggy and Nigel early on, in spite of being championed by Ms. Tyra herself. Jael didn't really photograph well, and appeared totally strung out (but endearingly so) in person, so the fact that she couldn't deliver a Cover Girl commercial was really the nail in the coffin. I mean, could you really see Jael the "anarchist" doing those weekly "My life as a Cover Girl" spots? Exactly. Although I nearly lost my shit when I saw Jael frolicking amidst the chickens on the shoot. I also nearly lost it when Renee busted out the Steve Irwin accent during her commercial, a touching yet hilarious homage (may he rest in peace). The other thing that really made me laugh was when, upon learning they'd be traveling to Australia, Jaslene said, "I've only been to the hood and around the corner." That was genius. I'm glad the girls are in Australia for their little trip; hopefully the challenge with Australian slang will be all we'll see of the annoying "cultural" bits Tyra throws in to seem worldly. Speaking of which, I love Natasha. She may be a mail-order bride, but she's a damn smart one. If she's not in the top three, I'll be shocked. Spring Shopping Guide: Silver Shoes
Metallics have been popular for so long now, they're hardly considered a trend. I like to think of them as a neutral--like metal jewelry, they go with nearly everything in your wardrobe. However, I feel the emphasis on metallics in recent years has been focused on gold and bronze, so it's time for a comeback from my favorite metallic, silver. This season, designers have perfected the silver shoe with leathers (and man-made materials) that look almost liquid--perfect for the futuristic undercurrent than ran throughout a lot of the spring shows in Paris and Milan. But the best part about these new silver shoes is that the selections range from comfy flats and sandals to sky-high platforms.

Practical enough to wear every day, but totally glamorous as well, this Moschino flat has a cool textured design and a color so shiny, they're almost reflective.
When it comes to glamour, however, no one beats Christian Louboutin, and I think we can expect to see this to-die-for T-strap sandal on various Hollywood starlets this season.
Tashkent by Cheyenne makes incredibly innovative shoes (their ankle booties were featured in my fall shopping guide last year), and this Speedie wedge, a Shopbop exclusive, is no exception. The finish is more distressed than I was aiming for, but I love the versatility and the shape.

The shoe that started my silver fixation, this Miu Miu flat is, well, surprisingly not too expensive, and having had several pairs of Miu Miu shoes for five-plus years, I can attest to their durability. Which is a good thing, because this slingback is simply a classic.
Another great flat, this ankle-strap ballet flat by Tapeet has a simple shape and appears to be made of quality leather.
Of course, when it comes to ballet flats, you can never go wrong with a classic, especially the Pirouette from London Sole.

I tend to not be a fan of Nine West shoes, but every once in awhile they surprise me, like with this Gavin flat. Definitely not an investment, but it's a fun way to go futuristic.
I love the pointe-shoe look of this Penny Loves Kenny Copa flat, but as I learned the hard way, elastic-back shoes are not good for people like me who have narrow heels.
Not for the shy, Steven's Lollyy platform pump has an ultra-sexy look and a very high heel. I love covered-platform shoes however (they seem less trashy to me), and the peep-toe style is one that you can wear well into fall--when, hopefully, the silver-shoe trend will still be going strong.

Fashion is still pumping up the volume for spring with babydoll, swing, trapeze, and A-line shapes. These show up most prominently in dresses, but if you feel like changing it up a bit, I suggest smock tops. (Note: not smocked tops, like those Juicy Couture tube dresses that were everywhere four or five years ago.) Smock tops still have that relaxed full shape that's everywhere this season, but you have more versatility in what you can wear them with--anything from miniskirts to skinny jeans to shorts. Because as much as you love wearing dresses, at some point you're going to need a break.

For most women I know, fear of looking like a blimp is the #1 reason to not wear full shapes such as smock tops. And that is not an irrational fear. But as with anything designed from Donna Karan, you can rest assured that this silk tunic is going to be impeccably cut and completely flattering (and for $1,500, it should be).
When it comes to that effortlessly chic bohemian look, no one beats Chloe. So it makes sense that their silk panel top is one of my favorites in this category.
For a more glam take on the trend, Adam + Eve's square-neck blouse has metallic trim, perfect for nighttime or just a more swanky look.

To combat shapelessness, this airy belted tunic from Sunner has a tie at the waist and a well-cut neckline.
As loyal Cheryl Shops readers know, I loooove butterflies. And although I do like the fact that this top has a print at all, I can't resist the allure of this butterfly-print top from Paul & Joe.
Graham & Spencer is one of my new favorite labels (I have an awesome wool jersey dress from them that I got at Barneys), and I like that this silk top is sheer--because you'll be able to see the body underneath, you won't look as shapeless in it.

For a budget version, this chiffon top is, well, very pink, but the shape is right on the mark.
For more color options, this babydoll top is a good choice, although the neckline is more of a scoop than a square (a minor detail, however).
This colorblocked metallic tunic from Urban Outfitters is a must-buy for me, though, because it has that rock-and-roll, Biba-inspired look that's going to be superhot for fall. And the only thing better than getting a trend for cheap is getting more than a season's worth of wear out of it.
