What to wear in Napa in winter

It's been cold in San Francisco. Really cold. Like, record-breaking, close-to-freezing cold. I know those of you who don't live in California may be playing the world's tiniest violin right now, but considering we're used to pretty consistent temperatures that take a slight dip in the winter, the weather lately has been a bit alarming. Case in point: it's usually about 10 degrees warmer in Napa than in the city (and even more in the summer), so I when I left my house last weekend in a thick, long sweater and scarf, I thought I'd be nice and cozy up in wine country. And while it was rather sunny—the weird thing about California is that the skies are oddly crystal clear when it's this cold—it was windy, and I spent most of the day wrapped in blankets, fighting off the chill. So before I get into my outfit, I should add a disclaimer that if you are going to Napa in the winter, you should add a warm coat to a look like this. But if the weather were totally ideal...

I bought this sweater last year at the Aran Sweater Market in Killarney, Ireland (which, by the way, was my favorite town in Ireland—I'd definitely recommend a visit to both the town and the store!), and it's a super-thick wool and cashmere blend. It's so warm, in fact, I rarely get to wear it, so I was excited to break it out for a day drinking wine outside in the sunshine. The length is great, too, because it provides ample thigh coverage, which I always like when I'm wearing white jeans.

It's hard to see in most of these photos, but I'm wearing a long-sleeved, tunic-length T-shirt from American Vintage, which, ironically, is a French brand. I bought this top 10 years ago (!) at a store in the Marais in Paris, and I've since happily discovered that you can find American Vintage here. Their tees are tissue-thin and incredibly soft, and they don't pill. I will wear this one until it's threadbare! The length (again, sorry you can't see it very well) is also perfect for wearing with skinny jeans or leggings, as it covers the bum.

If it's not raining, I like to wear white jeans in the winter—the no-white-after-Labor-Day "rule," by the way, is something the department stores made up ages ago to get people shopping even when it was still warm out, so pay no attention to it! Full disclosure, my white jeans (last seen here) are not my favorite pair ever—they're kind of lightweight and too stretchy, so if you have a pair that you'd recommend, I'm all ears!

A scarf was totally necessary for warmth on this day in Napa, so I bundled up in this one—I'd been looking for a big, blanket-like gray scarf for awhile, and I've been wearing this one all winter long. It's light enough that you can loop and wrap it, but it's still warm enough to protect your neck, as the Wu-Tang Clan would say.

It had been awhile since I'd broken out my Cult Gaia bag (last seen a while ago and also here), but I always associate it with wine country, and it added a little texture to my all-neutral look. I think these bags will be hot again this summer, so now's a great time to get a jump on yours!

I haven't had these boots as long as my T-shirt, but I've had them long enough, and it shows. They're Isabel Marant, they're so classic, and they're incredibly comfortable, hence I wear the crap out of them. I know they look a little beat-up, but I like them that way.

We shot these photos at Frog's Leap in Napa, where I'm a member, and which happens to be one of my favorite—and one of the most photogenic—wineries (it's also where we shot this post). Napa is still recovering from the wildfires last fall, and they definitely need visitors—if you're planning a trip there, please stop by, and tell them I sent you!

I know California has had some dipping temps lately but I kid you not we just got like the 20th snow of the season and our temps went from 60 degrees to 28 degrees in less than 24 hours. Love this cozy look of neutrals with touches of camel. I need that bag in my life and a cozy, light-weight grey scarf, too. The photos by that gorgeous winery are amazing, Cheryl.
