What to wear with a peasant dress

And what is a peasant dress, exactly? Good question. They're usually inspired by traditional, folkloric dresses, and have embroidery, tassels, and/or full sleeves. They're very boho in feel, and thus perfect for summer, especially when they're made in more lightweight fabrics like cotton and linen. One of my go-to brands for a boho, summery look is Loveshackfancy—I really love how they modernize these summer staples (they make a good little white dress too). They made this dress, which I bought  many months ago and which has appeared several times on my Instagram, but never here. Seeing as how it's Dress Month here at Cheryl Shops, I thought it was finally time to give it a proper outfit post.

What I love about this dress is that while it looks very traditional at first glance—I could be dancing around a maypole and milking a cow somewhere in the European countryside—it's been made more feminine and current with its color scheme (gotta love the millennial pink) and the details, like the oversized pompoms and the cutout sleeves. I'm also a fan of the midi length, but there are significant side slits to prevent it from looking frumpy. This dress is from this year's resort collection, I believe (hence why it's now at Off 5th), but I've linked both this exact one and the current-season version (which is on sale!) below. It's one of my favorite vacation dresses, but I've found it also works well in the city, with a few styling tweaks.

Just when you were wondering where my trusty denim jacket has been, here it is! (I last wore it here.) While the dress is casual enough already, the denim jacket lends it a more contemporary feel. In other words, I probably don't look like I'm going to milk a cow now (I hope). The sleeves on the dress are so big and billowy that I was more comfortable wearing my jacket over my shoulders—a styling trick that fashion editors love and I have a hard time pulling off, but I think it actually works here.

It's also been awhile since my Zara round bag has appeared here (it was last seen in this post), but I think it adds an element of trendiness to my look—again, hopefully I don't look like I'm milking a cow now. It does, however, have a rustic vibe that I think works really well with the dress, without being too same-same. I added my favorite Topshop sandals (last seen here) to give myself a little height,  and, well, because they're so darn comfortable. They're earthy enough to work with the look but not so earthy that they look costumey.

I've lived in San Francisco almost five years, and while the city is actually pretty small (it's 49 square miles and has only 800,000 residents), I find myself constantly discovering new spots. We came across the plaza where we shot these photos after leaving a movie theater; it's right in the middle of the financial district but a flight above street level, and I never would have known it was there. That's why I love living in cities—you discover something new every day.

I love these types of dresses, but I never wear them! I just buy them and they sit in my closet lol. I guess I'm just not a dress person.
