What to wear in NYC in winter

As some of you may know, I used to live in New York City—for 13 years, to be exact—and after moving to San Francisco five years ago, I've been back to visit every year. I almost missed a year, but thankfully squeezed in a trip right after Christmas. We lucked out with amazing weather (sometimes there are major snowstorms in December) and, as always, the trip was a whirlwind. I'll be sharing more photos later this week, but in the meantime, here's my winter uniform for NYC.

As we were walking around, Sean remarked how many Canada Goose coats he saw on people. I never owned one, but I know a lot of people swear by them—you spend so much time outside in NYC that it's worth investing in a really good coat or two. Coincidentally, I didn't buy this one until I moved to San Francisco , but when I lived in NYC, I followed the formula of always having two nice coats—one tailored (like this one) and one practical (like a Canada Goose). As for the coat I'm wearing here (and you last saw in this post), it's from Zara and several years old, but the double-breasted, menswear-inspired silhouette is still very much in fashion, and I've linked two similar styles below.

Everlane loves to hype its new products and I was a little skeptical about their new alpaca crewneck sweater, but I ordered it anyway. It's like a crewneck, but with a twist—the neck sits a little higher, and the sleeves have a little more volume to them. The yarn is also really unique—it's soft and lofty, with a kind of two-tone effect. I didn't know what to think at first, but Sean loved it, so I kept it. And I'm glad I did, because I've been wearing it at least once a week. I'm in a size small, and the fit is definitely a little oversized. My only quibble is that I wish it were a touch longer.

In winter, I'm all about jeans or leggings, especially on vacation. This is one of my favorite pairs, from Frame, which is my current go-to denim brand. My favorite cut of theirs is the le high straight; this is the step-hem version from a few years ago (you last saw them waaaay back in this post), which shows off an ankle boot really well. The denim is so soft, but it doesn't stretch out weirdly. I size down in this cut, so they're more of a cross between a straight and skinny; I'm in a 27 here for reference.

Aside from having a warm, chic coat, the other most important part about dressing for winter in NYC is having comfy boots. These Sam Edelman booties were a Cyber Monday impulse purchase (to replace the crappy boots from this outfit), and between the well-padded insole and low heel, they're actually really sturdy and great for walking around. Of course, I would not recommend wearing these in the snow or rain, but on a clear day, they're a great way to add a fun pop of color to your look.

Do I need to mention that I'm carrying my favorite A.P.C. bag? Well, okay, if you insist. After all, it's been nearly a month since I've featured it here. That said, it's a great bag for traveling—it holds just the essentials and allows you to go hands-free, which is important while power-walking in NYC.

We stayed in the southern end of Soho for this trip, which was perfect—the neighborhood was hip but not tragically so, and very centrally located—and we shot these photos outside of one of my favorite buildings. It's a former police headquarters that got converted into condos—David Bowie and Iman reportedly lived there. One side of it runs along Centre Market Place, a tiny street where you can find No. 6, which is one of my favorite stores in the city. But more to come in my NYC travel diary on Thursday!

Fun to meet another blogger in San Francisco! Looks like your coat was great for NYC, though. I was intrigued to read your thoughts about an Everlane product. I haven't purchased anything from them yet but would love to see more of what they have. I'm glad I found your post to see what you had to say about them and the sweater you bought.

That's a great NYC look. Love the red boots. I must say, I'd pick San Fran over NYC though, so good move.

I didn't know you lived in NYC for that long. My bro lives in Hoboken and we visit the city when we go. Love those red booties, the pointed toe and heel, and I have one pair of Frame and love them too, great hem on the jeans too!
