How to wear gray and pink

Pink and gray are two of my favorite colors, which makes them even better together. This outfit could be a late contender in the Valentine's Day game—Sean was a big fan of it, but more on that later—but it's so comfy, you could wear it on the weekend too. I also maybe went a little overboard on the accessories in this post, but 1) I wanted to layer in a bunch of different shades and textures, and 2) it was freaking cold outside and I wasn't wearing a jacket, so I was trying to stay as warm as possible. Oh, the things I do in the name of art!

This dress was a sale score at Athleta, where I'm increasingly buying more non-workout clothes. It's super comfortable and actually quite flattering thanks to the gathers at the waist and hips. My one quibble is that it's a bit snug in the bust—surprise, I have boobs!—but according to Sean, that's no problem at all. And, hey, it could be a last-minute Valentine's Day option. Sadly, this dress is mostly sold out in the gray color, but there are still some sizes left in the nice rusty color that it also comes in. I'm wearing a small, for reference, which is my usual size at Athleta.

I needed something to counteract the va-va-voom-ness of the dress, so I went with my trusty Madwell cardigan (last seen here, and probably a contender for Most Worn on Cheryl Shops). This cardigan has the benefit of covering my butt and being extra warm, and I like that the color keeps it feminine in spite of the somewhat bulky texture and shape. One thing to note: this sweater runs huge—I'm in a small, and probably should have gone down to an extra-small.

It's easy enough to wear one shade of gray and one shade of pink; the advanced move is layering in other shades of each. You don't want things to be totally matchy-matchy, so some variation is in order. The hat (which I'm pretty much in love with) is darker than the dress; the tote is lighter than the sweater; and the scarf is somewhere in between, and actually has some gray threads in it as well. You last saw this scarf back in October; Zadig & Voltaire items are usually somewhat of an investment, but their scarves are really gorgeous and unique, and, if you ask me, totally worth it for their outfit-making properties.

It's been raining so much in San Francisco that I haven't had much chance to wear my Calla booties (last seen with mixed prints) lately, so I was pleasantly reminded how comfortable they were when I put them on for this post. I really liked how the warm, taupey color ties the gray and pink together. This was my first time wearing them with a midi length, and what can I say, they just work with everything. Now if only it would stop raining again...

Sean and I are not big football fans, and for the first time in years, we hadn't been invited to a Super Bowl party (if I do go, I go for the food), so we shot these while the game was happening. Normally bustling on a Sunday afternoon, Fillmore Street was dead—in fact, most of the stores were closed—so our neighborhood felt eerily like a ghost town. We did, however, walk right into The Progress afterward for a drink, so there's the silver lining in that!
