How to wear a slip skirt in summer

The first thing you may notice about this outfit is that I’m wearing Birkenstocks. I will get to that in a moment. I would like to start with the fact that we shot these photos a mere week ago and I was literally freezing; today the high in San Francisco was 97 degrees. In the six years I’ve lived here, I think it’s been that warm here once, two years ago, and that was in September, which is usually the hottest time of the year. I know I complained about how crappy the weather was in winter and earlier in the spring, so it probably seems a little hypocritical (or even whiny) of me to complain about the heat now, but keep in mind, this is a city where most people don’t have air-conditioning…because even temperatures in the 70s are rare. Long story short, global warming is real. So in the name of less complaining and more action, here are 10 easy things you can do to stop global warming, courtesy of my alma mater. Now that’s that’s been said, let’s move on to my outfit.

If you follow my #OOTDs on Instagram Stories, you know that I wear this skirt all the time. I have narrow hips and never thought bias-cut skirts hung well on me, but this one miraculously does, and I think it’s because the (polyester) fabric has a nice weight to it, plus the waistband has a bit more structure, so it doesn’t get all stretched out. You saw this skirt in a monochromatic look for fall, and while I wore it with sweaters and boots in the winter, I’m all about sandals and light layers for spring and summer. Free People keeps bringing it back in a bunch of colors, because it’s just so good; I’m tempted to get it in black as well. One thing to note: this skirt runs very small, which is an anomaly for Free People; I’m in an 8 and the waistband is still rather snug, so consider going up a size or two.

A white button-down shirt is that classic pieces that’s always on those “wardrobe essential” lists, and I’ve almost always had a hard time finding the perfect one. I snapped up this Madewell shirt during an insider promo last month, and while I like it overall, it’s not perfect. The cut is very relaxed, which I like—I can wear it with slimmer-fitting bottoms without worrying about butt coverage, but it’s also roomy enough that I can knot it if I’m wearing it with higher-waisted things. My one issue is that it still has a little bit of boob gape, an issue that would be solved if I could unbutton one more button, however that would then show too much bra. (An even better solution would be higher, tighter armholes, which seems counter-intuitive, but I had to take two semesters of patternmaking at Parsons and, trust me, I know what I’m talking about). Anyway, I will continue my search for the perfect white button-down shirt, but in the meantime, this one will do. I’m in a size small, for reference, which is what I usually wear at Madewell.

As I mentioned earlier, I was freezing my buns off during this shoot, so I layered on my favorite denim jacket (last seen with a ballgown), which I’m sure my regular readers are tired of hearing about by now, but if you’re new to Cheryl Shops, it’s Gap’s Icon jacket and I’ve had it for years, because it’s the best denim jacket ever, full stop. And you might also be tired of my Staud bag as well, but I promise, I’ll have a different bag in next week’s post.

And now, the Birkenstocks. Yes, I love them. No, I will not apologize for that. They are comfy AF, I’ve been wearing them for years, and this is actually the third pair I own at the moment (and I’m considering a fourth). And not to go the peer-pressure route, but I’m not the only person who thinks they’re stylish. As far as Birkenstocks go, these are actually kind of fashiony, with their oversized shiny gold buckles and metallic finish. Do they really go with the rest of this outfit? Do I really care? (For the record, yes, I think they do.) This will not be the last you will see of them on this blog, sorry not sorry.

We shot these photos near Duboce Park in the lower Haight, right nearby several of Sean’s favorite bars, Black Sands Brewery and The Toronado. The park itself is great for dog watching, and I recommend the former, as it serves food, wine, and cocktails in addition to beer. It’s where we went to warm up after this shoot, something we’ll hopefully have to do once the weather gets back to normal.

Cheryl, this outfit really works! That skirt is so cute--I have to check into that. While I'm not a fan of Birkenstocks--on my small feet, they just look weird--they look perfect with your outfit.
