What to wear to Friendsgiving

The first year I moved to California, I had no idea what time of year it was until I went to a department store in late November and realized it was almost Christmas. It was sunny, it was still relatively warm…and it’s kind of like that all year. Of course, I’ve since realized that we have seasons here—they’re just very subtle. That said, fall tends to drag on for a bit, and by fall, I mean summer. So while everyone in the rest of the country is gladly breaking out the sweaters and boots, Californians are still in sandals and sundresses. But thankfully, as of the day I’m writing this, it appears true fall is finally upon us: it’s foggy again, my nose gets cold when I’m waiting for the bus in the morning, and I’m thinking about adding another blanket to my bedding. And it’s just in time, because I have a Friendsgiving dinner this weekend and it just doesn’t feel right to wear summer clothes to a very autumnal event. Here’s what I’m planning on wearing this year.

I am a fan of Everlane’s very reasonably priced cashmere (here’s one of my favorite sweaters) and decided recently to treat myself to this cashmere turtleneck dress, which in the grand scheme of things, feels like a steal at $165. Seriously, you will not find a cashmere dress for less than this. I plan on living in this dress for the next several months, although after seeing these photos, I think I’ll be adding tights underneath. (Apologies for blinding you with my pasty white legs.) I sized up to a medium because I was worried about length; I’m glad I did, and it’s so roomy, I could get away with wearing leggings or skinny jeans underneath too. Maaaaaybe one more inch of length would have been appreciated (I call BS on the model being 5' 10" and wearing a small), but for this price, I’m not complaining.

Jambu sent me their Chai boots and I literally could not wait to shoot them—they are the most gorgeous warm brown color (it's called whiskey, which is pretty accurate), they are ridiculously comfortable, and amazingly, they’re even waterproof. They’re the kind of boot you can wear while standing for hours on end, which is exactly what I plan on doing at Friendsgiving. But back to the color, I feel like brown is on the verge of a major comeback, and so I intentionally styled these with black, which is very ‘90s yet in a way that feels fresh and modern again. Oh, and they run a half size small—I went up to a 9 (versus my usual 8.5) and they’re just perfect. But you know what's even more perfect? You can use code CHERYLSHOPS19 for 20% off on Jambu's website through November 26th! Here are all of the boots.

Speaking of very ‘90s things, I decided to break out my vintage Dior bag (last seen with a camel coat) because it also felt very autumnal to me. I had thought about selling this one a few years back but I’m glad I held onto it, since this logo fabric is now back in fashion. What goes around comes around…

And this is completely off topic, but I realized that my hair looks so smooth and shiny in these photos—it’s been very dry here due to the wildfires, so I’m pretty sure that’s why. (And now that the fog is back, my hair is already starting to frizz.) But just wanted to make note of it, because I feel like it rarely looks so polished! I do need a haircut though...
