What to wear with a knit midi skirt

Way back in December, I mentioned in this post that I was contemplating buying a black midi skirt, but I talked myself out of it because I figured I could re-create the look with a dress. That worked for winter when I was wearing heavily layered looks, but now that it's warmer (and we've had a crazy heat wave), lighter is the way to go. So, long story short, I pulled the trigger on a black midi skirt, and I've worn it approximately five times in the last two weeks. It goes with so much, but here's one of my favorite ways to wear it.

This is the Skyline skirt by Free People; it's been around for several seasons, and they make it in a bunch of different colors. If you are incredibly nervous about wearing knits on your lower half, I recommend staring with the black version, like I did. But there's nothing to worry about—I find this skirt to be both incredibly flattering and very comfortable. It's a thick ribbed knit, but it's somehow lightweight at the same time—it would have been too hot for when our weather was in the 90s a few weeks back, but I was perfectly comfortable when it was in the 70s. The length is perfect—I am totally team midi skirt lately—and you can wear the slit wherever you want it (I went with the front). Like most Free People items, this skirt runs on the generous side of true-to-size; I'm in a small, in spite of the fact that I'm carrying around five extra pounds right now.

Like I said, this skirt goes with nearly everything, but one of my favorite ways to wear it is with something looser and more drapey on top to balance out the snugness. The gray top I'm wearing is one of the last things I bought from Stella & Dot; it's one of their best-selling tops, and it can be worn poncho-style, or as a cardigan. The fit is kind of weird—the sleeves are somewhat snug, but the body is huge. (I'm in a size small, and as you can see, it's still kind of ginormous.) You definitely need to wear something underneath, even if you're wearing it poncho style. I couldn't decide which way I liked better, so I'm showing you both!

Even though I've worn this T-shirt multiple times, this was the first time I realized it has a slightly rounded hem. I think I would have preferred a straight hem, but even so, this is my new favorite tee—so much so that I bought another one in gray. It's Madewell's whisper tee, and it may just eclipse J.Crew's vintage cotton tee as my holy-grail T-shirt. I'm in a size small for reference.

I promised last week that I'd give my Staud bag a break, so here's an old favorite, my Balenciaga city bag (last seen with tie-dye), paired with my soon-to-be summer favorite sandals by Vionic (last seen with a ball gown). I was just thinking the other day how I haven't bought a new pair of black sandals lately, then realized I have these, which are so freaking comfy (and cute). Always a good reminder to shop your closet first!

We've shot on this street before—in sweatpants and a Canadian tuxedo—and it always makes me laugh that it's right behind a Chevron station. But hey, when it works, it works!
