What to wear with a ruched dress

I tend to get into a winter rut of sweaters and jeans (and hoodies and leggings), and while we'll get back to that next week, I took advantage of the unexpected heatwave we've been having and wore a dress—with bare legs, no less! I should probably be alarmed that we're having 70-degree weather in January, but I decided to enjoy it now and go back to fighting global warming tomorrow. Anyway, this outfit is a little random, but so is life nowadays, and thus let's embrace it.

I haven't been wearing dresses much lately, although I would be if I were going into an office. For some reason, putting on tights to work from home seems like too much of a bother, so I was happy that it was warm enough to wear this one with bare legs. You last saw this Banana Republic dress with red loafers, and every time I put it on, I'm reminded of how comfy yet flattering it is. I actually ended up wearing this one on Christmas—it was about as much of an effort as I could make—and it's the kind of piece that you can totally dress up or down, depending on what you wear with it. I've had this dress for several months and so far, the fabric is holding up pretty well and not pilling; it's super soft and stretchy, with a nice, lightweight drape. I often struggle with body-con dresses (I have narrow, somewhat lumpy hips), but this one thankfully works for me. I'm in my regular size small, but it is a little loose—if you want a more formfitting look, I'd recommend going down a size.

My number-one rule in San Francisco is never go anywhere without a jacket, and I'm glad I wore this one, because the fog started rolling in just as we began to shoot and the temperature dropped 15 degrees in a matter of minutes. You last saw this J.Crew jacket with culottes, and as you can see, it works with a dress too. It has a very outdoorsy, preppy vibe, and I love how casual it makes the dress feel. This jacket is also surprisingly warm, thanks to the quilting; to be honest, I kind of forgot about it until I rearranged my closet a few weeks ago, but will be adding it back into my regular rotation. It's the perfect weight for temperatures in the 50s, give or take a few degrees. I'm wearing my regular size small, and I'd say it runs true to size.

As I mentioned in my honest review of this Celine cabas phantom tote, I sadly haven't carried this bag much since I bought it, but I've decided that's going to change in 2021, regardless of whether or not I have an office to go to. Side note: I just started watching Stylish with Jenna Lyons on HBO Max, and while I can't quite wrap my head around the competition part of the show, I am LOVING all of the styling and decorating tips from Jenna, plus all the peeks into her home. She's all about a mix of high and low, plus she said that you should wear your fancy things and not let them linger unworn in your closet, so there you go.

Speaking of honest reviews, I'm planning one on my Golden Goose Superstar sneakers, since they're one of the most clicked-on items (yet not most purchased) on this blog. Of course, that might be because I feature them so often here (you last saw them with wide-leg khakis), but that's because they're one of the most worn items in my closet. Long story short, they look great with everything, but I particularly like wearing them with skirts and dresses, because there's a tiny hidden wedge inside that gives you just a bit of lift that elongates your legs (and gives you a little confidence boost). They are worth the investment and run true to size, but stay tuned for a more in-depth post.

I always love the easy vibe of a dress with sneakers! This is such a cute look for going out and about! It is still way too cold here for dresses of any sort!
